Random shrimp deaths in mature tank

There are never "random" deaths, there is always a cause! If the shrimp are dropping off one by one it is usually (but not always) either a bacterial infection or a moulting issue. You need to determine which issue before you can address it, although both of these can be caused by high nitrates.

Not even Blue Tigers breed true. You can see pics of the Blue Jelly here:http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_6b4fea280100s9re.html These don't breed true either, maybe 3 or 4 from each batch. I keep Blue Jelly and Incredible Hulk in a tank together and just remove the babies that don't pull rank...

What filter do you have on this tank? Is there any chance you could of had an ammonia spike?
  16. D

    Pregnant Cherry Shrimp Death

Agree with Viv, parameters don't matter with cherries. The nitrates are sky high, that's a big issue. You need to be aiming for a max of 5 for nitrate, even thats too high. High nitrates lower the immune system of shrimp, preganant shrimp are always more sensitive anyway. Lower your nitrates...

  18. D

    Pregnant Cherry Shrimp Death

Have you tested GH lately? Its sounds growth related. As the shrimp has been carrying eggs for 4 weeks she would not have molted, i suspect a calcium deficiency but this is just a guess without knowing more. Any chance of posting your water parameters?

Keeping Blue Tiger Shrimp, Advice Please?

I have kept Blue Tigers, still have a few. A Guide To Crystal Red Shrimp

Looking For Reputable CRS Breeders In The UK

Massively! Cherries are really hardy, almost impossible to kill. Crystals are extremely sensitive and water conditions need to be spot on and remain stable. 20g new red cherry setting up help please

The problem with using standard gravel will be your KH. Kh readings need to be 0 or as close to it for the CRS to breed, your going to struggle to keep your KH at 0 and ph stable without using an active substrate.
  29. D

20g new red cherry setting up help please

Don't buy anything yet, you might not need to. If your using RO water and your parameters are that high then something in the tank is buffering the water. I suspect the TMC stuff you use but i can't be sure as i have never used it. Have you got any sort of rock in your tank?
  30. D

20g new red cherry setting up help please

Loads! Your ph needs to be around 6.4-6.6, KH 0 and Gh 4-6. Even if you do large water changes with RO water its unlikely your parameters will stay low enough for CRS, you have nothing in there to buffer the water. You live about 15 miles from me, which means your tap water is shockingly hard...

Shrimp substrates can be used with tap water, it is how i started. Using tap water will shorten the lifespan of the substrate, but not as short as you are suggesting. 65. D

    The Story So Far..........

If you have an active substrate then keeping you KH at 0 is no problem, there is no threat of a ph crash etc. The parameters look good, the only thing strange is being able to keep the parameters stable if you are using normal gravel, there MUST be something in the tank?
  66. D

20g new red cherry setting up help please

If the long term plan is CRS then get yourself a decent active substrate, like Ebi Gold. It will help buffer your water and keep it stable. Cherries can survive in pretty much all conditions so use them to practice on, try and keep your tank parameters what they would be if keeping CRS. If you...
  67. D

20g new red cherry setting up help please

If you are only keeping cherries then that should be all you need. As long as you have a gh reading of around 5, to help with moulting, you will be fine. Cherries are extremely easy to keep.
  68. D

    The Story So Far..........

Yes if he is using RO water then the KH should be 0, what i am suggesting is that it is not reading 0. I think there is something in the tank, possibly some kind of rock that is pushing the KH up. 0 KH is what helps the shrimp breed. In the wild a heavy rainfall often encourages shrimp to...
  69. D

    The Story So Far..........

i disagree, kh 0 is perfect! But i just don't think it is reading 0 or the shrimp would be breeding. Its normal for CRS breeding to slow down during the winter months but if your dosing the breeding liquid you shouldn't have a problem, your kh MUST be higher than 0, that's your problem.
  70. D

20g new red cherry setting up help please

Its fine for something simple like cherry shrimp. If you want to keep something like CRS etc then its useless, it does not buffer the ph low enough, it has no effect on kh and only last about 6 months. I have only ever heard horro stories from people that have used it. Save your money!!!!
