My friend didn't do a water change, personally I have never had an issue with London tap and would be surprised if it could be that lethal, I think most of the London shops mainly use tap water rather than RO.
This is a great idea, thanks.
Nice, thanks for the suggestion - not sure my tank...
Hi there guys and gals.. was a week into a three week holiday when my friend who was looking after my tank sent me a message that she was very sorry but all my 'colour' fish had died. :(.
I lost 8 Boesemani, 4 Siamese Algae Eaters, a pair of Kribenis and some Nerite snails. This has left me...
I went to the Charterhouse Aquatics showroom launch and felt very poor looking at their stunning display tanks, the ADA tank look reasonably priced by comparison. You could swim in one of the tanks it was that big. Worth a look if anyones in east London town.
An alternative to steel and netting is the rigid plastic mesh they sell in hobby craft stores.
I used butterfly netting as it's a lot cheaper than steel or rigid plastic mesh but it does sag in places (which does give a more natural look) but netting is a pain to insert without draining the...
I had trouble with the solenoid on the co2 supermarket reg but kudos to them for clear instructions on how to resolve and were happy to replace if it didn't work out.
I have a female boesemans that is refusing to eat, her belly is very shrunken. All others in the tank are eating healthily. She shows interest in food but is not eating. Tried flakes, micro pellets, Spectrum Thera A, various frozen. Not sure if she will take Algae or veg, will try again with...
If I was going to change my set-up I would use a filter that has input and output connections at the base of the filter rather than the top as this would reduce the number of bends in the hose needed to fit everything in the cupboard.
Hi Nat N, i'm running a 406 with the hydor 300w ext heater, I have no issues with the 406 but no experience of the other brands suggested. If I get the chance I will measure the unit for you, it's pretty much the same size as the box it comes in and the dimesnions on amazon are 19.3 x 36.8 x...
Well Co2 supermarket came through, their emails were going to my junk folder. Martin instructed me to lubricate the solenoid piston with some oil and it's back to silent.
Bertie
Was your original regulator bought from co2 supermarket? If so did you manage to get a refund from them?
I'm asking as the solenoid I bought from them 2 months ago has started making an unbearably load buzzing noise and they haven't responded to my request for a replacement..
Ah.. didn't spot that you had it upside down. I fitted it the other way round but it was tricky to avoid kinking. If it works ok for you I might try switching it.
thanks, I tried boddingtons but wasn't able to get any off-cuts from them. I have bought the butterfly netting from here instead.

Yes, you should have a check valve between the solenoid and the up reactor. It might leak if installed incorrectly but that's easy to check with soapy water. Water will run back, might not damage the solenoid but why take the risk?
My two cents, one of the biggest hurdles to getting bettas into the tanks they deserve is that retailers have to seperate them to avoid aggression. It's better for their well being to be kept singly in smaller tanks than with tank mates in larger tanks where their aggression will result in...
Hi Mafoo I run a 406 on a 190l tank and I added a powerhead to get the flow to the level I want, it's a decent filter but there are cheaper alternatives. One of the site sponsors has added some eden filters which have in built heaters but I don't know how well these are rated, might be worth a look.
Hi oldbloke, isolation tanks are always a great plan before adding fish to an established tank. I wouldn't try to medicate/treat a fish unless I was positive that I had identified the ailment though so best path is to just observe them as they are. Make sure the filter on your isolation tank is...
There are a couple of shops in JJ market that only sell Bettas, i'd guess roughly 100 tanks with removable card dividers so you can see them flare at the neighbour. Lot's of trophies on the walls too so i'm guessing they are top quality. There are definitely betta breeders that you can visit in...
I also have the older y shaped model. I have the water hose running horizontal with the co2 line above the outflow from the atomizer so the co2 is being pumped in against the water flow if you see what I mean.

Hi Bertie, like you and ian_m i'm using the co2 supermarket reg with an up inline diffuser and it does work. I also thought my diffuser (ebay) could be a fake As ian_m says it doesn't seem to kick in until you get a good bubble count going. Mine is misting at 1 bubble per second, less than this...
There's a filter media product in the fluval lab series that is designed for reducing Nitrates.. I have used it but wasn't really checking results to see how effective it was. Some people rate it, others didn't notice any difference.
Thanks Bandersnatch for taking the effort in writing this up. I was in BK for a month in March and wanted to do a write-up on JJ market, unfortunately I left my iphone at the apartment and only took my simple no-camera phone. Looks like you beat me to it!
It really is an amazing place, well...
I have a 55 gal low tech tank running a fluval 406. Bio load is approx 90% of maximum, moderately planted with 30% water change per week. I rinse out each filter sponge and media tray once a month but this is staggered so no more than 50% of media/sponge gets rinsed every 2 weeks. I will clean...
Boesemani rainbow fish tend to be responsive to their carers. Mine always watch me when I move near the tank in case there's some food coming. These are a hardwater community fish that are very colourful. There are lots of rainbowfish species varying in size and colour and all make good...
Ha ha, yes that is sad. I think it's looking good, nice shape overall and has a very natural unforced feel to it. Plants look healthy too, but where are the fish?
Where can I buy ball valves for 16/22mm pipes? I want to use them as shut offs for the drilled pipework on a fluval tank.
I looked on ebay and searching for 16mm ball valves brings up this
4-pack16mm Barbed Ball valve, in line Irrigation valve Stop Cock, | eBay
This has confused me as it...
I'm planning to convert from diy yeast co2 to a pressurised system and need some help to make sure I get a good reg.
I'm intending to use a 2kg Fire Extinguisher and an inline atomizer on the filter outflow (as well as a hydor external heater). I'm also going to use a solenoid on a timer.
Do I...
Thanks Tom & Gill. I use an auto feeder with a neighbour as back up in case things go wrong. I think i'll try the cherry red shrimp vs. kribensis once the tank has filled up with plants, if it's not a total slaughter then I might give the gobies a go.
Not so sure about the gammarus.. they...
I've always wanted to add some Bumblebee Gobies to my tank, the thing holding me back is that I understand them to be picky feeders only accepting live foods. This wouldn't work for me as I like to go on my holidays for 2-3 weeks. I gave up on the gobies but recently thought about adding cherry...
I used assasin snails once to take out a snail population, it's certainly effective. I added one assasin snail to a 60l tank and ended up with over 30 assasin snails.
Really your replacing a harmless snail species with a predatory species of whelk which for me isn't an improvement.
I've never had an issue with Anubias releasing toxins in a tank but I don't keep shrimp. I always remove the plant from the tank, give it a clean and then cut the rhizome or remove the leaf stem. I would only cut the rhizome if I wanted to split into two plants.
I always use an auto feeder when on holiday, my last holiday was four weeks so needed something reliable to last that amount of time.
There are some cheap (less that £10) chinese made auto feeders out there that are great value for money, a bit fiddly to set up though and definitely worth...
I'm running a pair of 3000, i found them reliable and good value. Agree with Pinkmummy79 that the flow is a tad too strong for a planted tank, I have to angle the flow off the side of the tank to avoid knocking over the plants. Shouldn't be a problem with the 2000.
Wow 10 out of 10! I really like shots 10 to 13, they have amazing colour and nice clean lines. I also like the way you set up the hardscape, looks simple but very effective.
I have always wanted Bumblebee Gobies for my hardwater tank, gorgeous little fish with lots of character. Unfortunately they are tricky feeders demanding live foods so not suitable for me. Worth a look as an interesting unusual fish.
Both plants do well in low light and if they need more can grow out of the shade. They are also attractive mixed together with the ferns hiding the rhizomes and roots of the anubias.
I think once the crypts are established along the line it will fill the space under the wood? you might not see...
It looks like the best location in the tank for crypts to go into.
Do you have any plans for the wood above it? might look good with Anubias or Java Fern in the dark hollow, though it allready looks very decent as is.
I only picked up some java fern for the stump-thing in my tank after realising my ambitious plan was beyond my limited experience.
I started compiling the list as I had the notion to use the moss wall technique but with a variety of plants like the plant walls you see nowadays:
PLANTWALL -...
Hi Occean.
I'm not the best person to ask, all I have is what i've picked up from forums.. I'll have a crack at it though!
First work out where the tank deadspots are when you have the Eheim set up and running with the spraybar. If you have fish in the tank this helps so you can see where...
Hi Dean, I asked a similar question here, but you should also factor in your lighting and co2 as not all these plants would be suitable:
Plants that don't need a substrate? | UK Aquatic Plant Society
Thanks for the advice, I think i'll go for two smaller power heads. This corner tank has more dead spots than a graveyard!
Has anyone had any experience of the All Pond Solutions powerheads?
I'm running a 190l corner tank with a fluval 406 and 205 filter. I'm planning on retiring the 205 for use as a backup and replacing with a powerhead to improve the flow.
Would a single koralia 4000 be better than a pair of koralia 1600?
You get more bang for your buck with the larger...
Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated.
Floating plants eh? Not what I was looking for but a valid answer all the same :) I'm happy no one suggested Algae!
Apologies if this posted in the wrong section, i've just joined and don't have the full access.
I have a young adult female Pelvicachromis Pulmer in need of a new home. She came from maidenhead aquatics with a sister as a potential mate for my male Krib about three months ago. The sister has...
I'm trying to put together a list of plants that don't want to be planted in a substrate. Here is my list so far, can you think of any additions? Can Crypts be added to the list? I'm looking for shorter plants ideally.
Anubias
Java Fern
Mosses
Bolbitis heudelotii
Hygrophila pinnatifida...
Thanks Alastair. I was thinking about a journal for the project as I will be trying out something a bit unusual.. could be a disaster though in which case no journal
Hello
My name is Ian and have been keeping fish for 4 years, I got into planted tanks about six months ago so still have a lot to learn! I have been reading the excellent tutorials and am very impressed with the knowledge and advice the members have been giving out. I will be asking many...
