I started with DSM and 12hrs of light.
I gave up on DSM and flooded the tank. Initially (out of ignorance) I stuck with 12hrs but was advised to cut it to 5hrs, as I understand it, and increase later.
How long should I stay at 5hrs, and how quickly can I increase it?

What are the specs of the tank and light?

Normal photoperiods are usually 8 hrs iirc.

Slowly slowly catchy monkey.
5hours is plenty, I'd say for the first few months, then an hour or so more till you're up to 8 hours over a few more months, the only things that happen quickly tend to be bad.

I only use 6 hours of growing light a day & have been for the last 4-5 years.
I dont get algae issues but I have good solid growth from my plants, I do however have sunrise sunset periods using LEDs & a blue tube. So my lights are on for 9 hours a day but only brightly lit for 6 hours.
