Hi all,

Can anyone identify what this is I have appearing on a Java Fern in a new tank? I’m sorry about the quality of the photo:(

I’m not sure how to tell the difference between various types yet (and my slight colour blindness isn’t helping match them up to the pictures on James’ guide).

I’m hoping it is just the normal sort of growth to expect on an uncycled tank but would still like to know what it is.

Cheers

Alan

From growth pattern it looks like early growths of back beard algae (bba), its a type of red algae and tends to grow on slow growing plant leaves and at times on the edges of leaves. If you look it up on the internet there are lots of pics of this in various stages of growth. Typically other type of thread like algae, such as stagshorn will also be shown.
