I believe a layer of pure sand would help protect the liner and would be more resilient compared to a carpet.Just my thoughts.
A lot of folk say use carpet before you lay the underlay, but after a few years the carpet rots to nothing, meaning the liner is vulnerable.
Just wildlife, no fish. Frogs, newts etc. What you thinking of putting in the pond?

I definitely <"would do this as well">.make pebble beaches and cover the liner to protect it
My garden pond just had rock and a bit of dead wood put in it when I finished, but it all still grew rather quicker than I hoped.does anyone see the same problem I do?
Thanks for the advice folks. All new to me.
