Has anyone managed connect one of these 'universal' (lol) adaptors to the body of the python? The inner threaded section hits the washer before the larger thread can engage.

Maybe remove the washer? You don't need (and won't get) full water-tightness there anyways. It doesn't matter unless you have a shut-off valve on the other end of the hose, in which case you get tiny streams of water coming from that joint, spraying all over your bathroom (ask me how I know).
