All I know about NIR I learnt from Bruce Bugbee! :)
 
Personally, I'm pretty neutral for it's use in an aquarium.
Pretty clear it has "effects".
As to adding it to led fixtures... Sure why not.
T5's had a very little bit of some at 710.

Aquatic leaves are generally pretty transparent to the other ignored spectrum ....green.
They aren't high light plants and there isn't 50ft of canopy above them.
I've "internally" debated this for years actually when they started using it to reset ps2 ( I think, the early use was like 15 min ir only at the beginning of the day, same at the end.) Some application of the Emerson effect.

More of a curiosity though.

I haven't look at that use for years though.
Currently photons of other colors are not a shortage for most
I'm still open though. Someone will need to prove the "need" in aquariums.
