    Switching to Low-tech

I never knew measuring spoons would bring UKAPS to life. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will hit the high street and see what I can bag for a few quid. I will report back with photos ;-)

    Switching to Low-tech

My plants from java arrived yesterday and after a quick rinse I've added them to the tank. I expect the Crypt will melt back as per usual, but at least they look like strong plants. The pots of Java Fern sit nicely on the substrate, but the Cera will need some Slate tying to it to keep it...

    Switching to Low-tech

What do I do about the 'gunk' that gathers at the bottom of the tank? It would normally get hoovered away during a water change. Do I leave it, or is there a way to remove it without disrupting the balance of a low tech tank.

    Switching to Low-tech

My dry ferts and seachem Eq. arrived today. Just got some small pots to start off with (100g i think) Plus i've put in an order for more plants from Java-plants. I should be getting 5 Potted Ceratopteris, 3 Potted Java Ferns and 5 Crypt. Balansae. I'll keep my eye out for some pygmy chain...

    Switching to Low-tech

This is where the Latin plant names come back to haunt me, because i had an Indian Fern as part of my initial plant bundle about a year ago. My care (as i remember) was not in keeping with its requrements! As you said i need to increase my plant mass so if you have some spare that would be...

    Switching to Low-tech

Hi Darrel, Firstly thanks for the interesting reading. I completely take on board what you've said about plant mass, its clearly the element of the low-tech sceme that i have overlooked. In its current state i suppose i am on countdown to some aglae problems. The Ceratopteris has (until now)...

    Switching to Low-tech

I'll keep an eye out for one at a good price. Right here is a photo of the current scape. I am hoping the Anubias Barteri at the back will grow tall again and create the background with the Amazon Swords and Vallis (small at the mo) on the right. Front left-to-right is Java Fern, Anubias nana...

    Switching to Low-tech

Hmm, yeah i can see why there aren't many low-tech journals now! I have placed my order for Seachem Equillibrium (from ebay) and KNO3, KH2PO4 from FluidSensorOnline Because my tank will rely on constant and regular fish feeding, i think i am going to buy an auto-feeder. 15 minutes research...

    Switching to Low-tech

Thanks everyone for letting me know their experience/suggestions. I am hoping to re-scape tonight and then I'll share a photo of how it looks. I am going to split quite a few of my anubias so they cover a larger area. Reposition all of the wood and move the vallis to the back of the tank. I...

    Switching to Low-tech

I've just dived back on here before heading off to bed. (Politics has kept me busy tonight) I'll read the article on the way to work tomorrow (thanks for posting some specific help) and i'll keep the extra points you have made in mind. I will also try and get a picture of the setup on here (i...

    Switching to Low-tech

I am trying to move my tank onto a lower tech setup (not that it's high tech now) I have been dosing EasyCarbo until now and i just don't get the chance to keep up the routine, so i am trying to switch to a no CO2 setup. Rio 180 1.2 wpg TetraTec Ex700 Pool filter sand substrate (with...

    Crypt Balansae arriving from abroad

A couple of pictures of how it looks after all the plants arrived. Plus a random one of a Cherry Shrimp!

    Crypt Balansae arriving from abroad

lol  does that mean i missed out on a discount. I got a very good price for the plants and its great to know you've had a good experience with exactly the same variety. I can't wait to see them thrive. In my fairly low tech tank, how long before they reach the surface? 3/4 months about right?

    Crypt Balansae arriving from abroad

Thanks, Jungle-style is what i am after. But i intially bought a "plant bundle" which included plants i didn't like or didn't fit well with the rest of the tank. So i am aiming for a predominantly crypt based jungle style (if there is such a thing!) as it seems to suit my slightly lower-tech...

    Crypt Balansae arriving from abroad

Thanks, i wanted to make sure they went in the right spot straight away as i've read about the problems with moving crypts. I have a location in mind at the background/left-hand side of my tank (in front of the out pipe). But what do you think about spacing, i've had to replant Vallis and Ech...
