Apple snails

I have noticed in two of my aquariums that my apple snails,float on the surface, sometimes for hours on end.This alarmed me at first,but then I noticed that they sink back down and carry on as normal.

Any idea's as to why they do this ?

Hi all,
They are air breathing, and if they can't breathe air eventually they will drown.

I thought it was becuase they can get a build up of air in their shell, which would eventually cause them to float, but, Darrels explanation is better

I find mine float to the surface if there's food up there, they don't like having to wait for it to sink down!
