japanese hairgrass in europe?

why is it so difficult to find japanese hairgrass in europa? any ideas? i am still looking for this plant and can't find it anywhere :(

found a webshop on this forum but the delivery costs were so high it would be a very expensive plant to buy. Is this a very rare type of plant? or is it something else why i is so difficult to find here?

just wondering how you think about this :)

i've only ever seen it at aquaspot world.couldn't find it anywhere else.don't know why :? .i'm sure theres a lot of people that would want it.

It's so similar to parvula that european growers don't see much point in having in their growing lists I'd imagine.
I've actually grown this plant and really liked it but I'll be totally honest I wouldn't be able to tell it apart unless it was side by side.
Mine came from Ed seley who I'm pretty sure got his from aquaspot. There are so so many plants we can't get that malaysian growers have readily available, simply because it's a hot bed for hybridisation and growers fixing aquarium strains of plants, plus the hobbys much bigger there.

The one sell in Singapore is different. Normal parvua is straight and Japanese hairgras is curly. You can differentiate the Emerse form though.

also the parvula is difficult to get. they only Eleocharis they sell is: Eleocharis acicularis.

but i want the smaller version as forground plant. Eleocharis acicularis is to high.

I wouldn't have said it was very curly, but it has a definite twist and curl to it. IMO it's much nicer then the standard dwarf hairgrass I've seen in other tanks. I don't have any anymore but if I want it again I'd order some more from Aquaspot World. I did send some out to a few people; maybe someone out there still has some???

Hey Ed. If you do ever order some think of me I'd be glad to try some again.

Does anyone know the correct latin name name for this plant? Just curious, I see it referred to as Eleocharis sp. Japan or Eleocharis sp. Japanese hairgrass but neither of those I would imagine is the correct scientific name especially the last one :D

Could be right mate I will check that out, although I see references to belem as Eleocharis sp. dwarf hairgrass, can't win :D although you are probably correct, see lots of references to belem = sp. Japan.

Pity mind you, I have access to a new supplier list from Singapore but I don't see that on it, typical eh :)

Yeah just order two weeks before hand, doesnt seem to be a problem getting the plants, order goes in every two weeks AFAIK. Better off ordering because they have limited supply in the shop, hit and miss if your looking for say a particular foreground plant or anything like that. Ask Gavin he knows his plants which is helpful. Quality is very good IMHO, picked up a good few things so far which they had in the shop, prices are good as well Gav will always do you a deal if you are spending a few bob. Usually €5 a pot the huge ferns were only €15 though, very cheap, picked up a load of Glosso (5-6 pots worth) for a tenner the other day, Stuff grows like a weed anyway but thats what they had.

request it?

Its not on the list doubt they could get it in otherwise, the list is huge but unfortunatly thats not on it, plenty of other little gems there so I wont get too hung up on that one :D

For example? I'm intreuged, our plant lists always seem so limited!

Probably not an amazing list if you are a collector or anything like and Im sure a lot of shops have better lists than this but that said its pretty good, some species are a bit limited but overall better than anything available to me up to now, quantities are big and prices are cheap what more could you want!! besides I can always visit the Tropica dealers if Im really stuck :geek:
