Just about to order my converter, so i can move over from disposable, to my 3kg refillable bottle.using my existing gauges

Ive looked at several threads on the subject, and it appears i must have a special type of washer. IS THIS TRUE ?? Does this fit between the converter and the gauge, or the gauges and the bottle ??
Can i buy this item easily, off the shelf from a mainstream supplier. Whats it called??

Also i was looking at gauges from a german company i have used on Ebay, and their gauges fit straight onto a refillable Co2 bottle. Will this require washers ? As my gauges are a couple of years, as another option Im cosidering buying the correct size instead.

Sorry to ask so many questions, but Im still on a learning curve with CO2, and a little unsure. .

Hi,

I use a D-D regulator on a CO2 FE setup and have done for some time now.

Yes you definatly need a washer to fit between the adapter and the FE or it will leak and whilst you may 'get away' with a standard rubber one for a while eventually it will perish as standard rubber is not impervious to CO2 (i.e. it perishes). Thats why wherever seals are encountered with co2, nitrile rubber is recomended. Thats also why standard airline isn't recomended for use with co2 applications and specialised co2 tubing is used instead.

Thing is pressurised co2 canisters are dangerous if not used correctly and expensive if they discharge through incorrect fitiing so IMO its just prudent to use the correct washers in the first place and change them each time you change the regulator, there only a few pence each and its just not worth skimping on.

There is a lot more info in the following threads that I have helped others with in the past including where to buy the right washers cheaply.

I purchased a complete CO2 kit from that german Ebay company and can confirm the regulator comes supplied with washer

Many thanks for confirming, what it comes with.

Hi Bogwood,

Thats interesting and PTFE tape would be a bit cheaper if it works ok. When I first got my converter from my LFS the guys there sold me a pair of washers specifically for use with it which were on a blister card with all the D-D packaging livery. So they definately sell them for use with the adapter or at least they used to.

The male threaded part of the adapter screws into the regulator which itself has a rubber seal fitted into it and I used PTFE tape on the thread for good measure. The point being that when the kit was originally designed by D-D they used rubber seals on the high pressure inlet to the regulator on both sides of the adapter which is evident by the picture in their catalouge and the fact that I actually had some in there packaging and still know where these can be bought today and in the same D-D packaging, last time I asked they wanted £3 for two washers, how long they've had these in stock for though I wouldn't know.

Perhaps they have changed their mind, or can no longer supply them, or the person you talked to doesn't understand what they were talking about. Who knows?

Although I don't worry about the use of PTFE myself with co2 applications I know that some think there could be an issue with it, maybe someone in the know could enlighten us with regard to this.

Me I'll still be using my 12pence Nitrile rubber washers cause I have enough to last me about 10 years.

Regards, Chris.
