Now I know fish growth can be controlled with temperature being one of the variables, but just how much does it affect plant growth/nutrient uptake? Is there any significant differences between say 15-30 degC? Is it species-dependant?

I've never heated a high tech tank, and they stay around 18-22 degrees generally.

Hi Tom,
Yes, Temperature has an effect on food production. Up to a point increase in temperatures cause increased growth rate. 30 deg. C is about at the limit, after which further increased temperatures causes stress. As usual, algae are better at adapting to higher temperatures. Among other things, the temperature increase lowers the solubility of CO2/O2 making these less available to the plants. This doesn't mean that all the plants will keel over above 30 deg just that there is no benefit above this value.

Cheers,
