As per title really, can you inject too much CO2 into a tank with only Bettas, Gouramis etc? Does it just affect fish that breathe form the water, or does it not work like that?
It's not just down to them being able to breath atmospheric air it's what the excess co2 does to the bloodstream that stops them from absorbing the oxygen.
I'm sure sure somone more clued up than me can elaborate on that.

I think Spyder is right, it is due to the "Bohr effect". I also think that the ability to breathe atmospheric O2 will mean that you can keep Anabantoids at much higher CO2 levels than most fish.
I think the problem is that if the differential between the CO2 levels in blood and water is very low, diffusion of CO2 from the gills will slow or even cease.
