Planing a new tank...question?

Hi,
Ive got a planted tank for a few yeasr now and i noticed that over time the slope of the substrate seems to eventually level out (Aquasoil). I suppose this could be from replanting ect.....

Im getting a new tank and was wondering does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening???
Maybe a piece of thick plastic half way back under the Aquasoil to create a sort of step effect which might stop the soil from moving forward.....any suggestions???
