This is prob a less than helpful reply .. But im sure i have read this before and it actually said in the pump manual that the taps can be used to reduce the flow ...

I don't know for sure but I think the way you have done it by restricting the filter outflow is the better way of doing it rather than the inlet, something to do with drawing and pushing pressures.....I could be wrong though :/
 
The Eheim manual for my 2324 says flow can be adjusted by moving the tap on the filter output. It specifically says not to adjust flow on the input side. So I think you'll be ok.
