Friends Vallis stems/leaves prone to breaking

Im asking this for a friend who had vallis in a malawi tank (so above neutral pH and hard water). The fish ignored the plant however the stems were prone to breaking easily whenever they were touched by her net when catching fish. I thought it was meant to be quite a tough plant. Would this be lack of CO2 or lack of ferts that caused it ?

With an environment that needs constant oxygenation and love nitrate levels, what is the best way to correctly look after a plant such as this ? Or is there another thin bladed stem plant that is more suitable that looks like a reed/grass ?

Thanks.

How much light does your friend have? Inorganic nitrate doesnt hurt the system. The fear of nitrate comes from the fact that high nitrate levels equal dirty water in a fish only system. Its not the nitrate that is problem but how it gets there that is. Dumping 30ppm of nitrate into the tank via kno3 is not a problem but 30ppm of nitrate obtained via the nitrogen cycle will mean a high bod due to the waste level which is not good.
So your friend dosent need to fear nkp and will be able to use ferts.
Any chance of a pic to help come up with a better answer.
