Are good quality Cree 6500K LED's alone ok to for my lighting unit or do I need to or would I be better to add additional colours either for aesthetic purposes or for the plants ?

IME, plants can adjust from 2700K to 14000K or even more, but whether the tank will still look pleasing is a whole different story!

From my experience, Cree 6500K LEDs alone will turn red plants green, even at a really high PAR. Check out one of @clone journals - http://www.ukaps.org/forum/threads/mini-l-and-diy-led-light.28842/. He uses a mixture of whites, reds and royal blues to create a very nice aesthetic and nice red plants too.
