Topping akadama with another substrate

Hi everyone,

I've used akadama as it doesn't cost a fortune and it works well for growing plants but I'm not so happy with the look of it. It's ok with the green plants but I've planted some Alternanthera reineckii mini and it just does work with color of the akadama.
So I was wondering if anyone would have tried to top the akadama with another substrate?
I think black would be ideal.

hey manu

it won't be a problem all. just top the gravel as normal and move the akadama at the front back abit so you won't see the colour

I read this great tutorial a while ago, just still concern about the weight of the gravel/akadama. I don't to end up with a blend That would look even worse!

it will but if you use your other hand and hold the substrate down where the plant is it won't mix in. pull the roots up slowing and you won't have a proplem.
