I've bought this nice looking pice of wood today and now soaking it in the bath

What plants would you strap to it?

Should I have the thicker end coming from the top of the tank with the thinner end leading to the middle of the tank or other way around?

Like above said; mosses, Javafern and Anubias are easy and ideal for this.........
- IMO it would be a real shame to cover all of this beautifull piece of wood in plants, though. Instead I would do groups of plants with "bare wood" spaces inbetween.
A nice effect can be created by adding a bit of moss right under the Anubias/Javafern when you tie it to the wood - the moss will grow a beautifull base under and around the plant.
Congratulations with your nice piece of "Liana-wood" (this was the name of it, when I worked for a Zoo) and good luck with your project.
- there's really a great potential there (no pressure intended :D ).

I'd go
Microsorum mini
Fissidens
Anubias Nana Petit
Bolbitis difformis
Make a tapestry
