HOB filter media

hi folks!

I have a small (marina) HOB filter that I will be using in my planted tank mainly for water flow. They use crappy cartridges that I would be keen to replace for filter media.
Any advice on what to use in place of the cartridges? There are only 3 small sections that could contain media.

Might try and diy a new larger chamber for the pump to attach to?

Coarse filter sponge works really well. You don't need to fill the whole filter. I would just put up a piece next to the outlet.

I have a pre-filter sponge on the intake.

I like a big chunky <"PPI10 or PPI20 sponge block">, but you could use "Fluval Edge Pre-Filter Sponge".

I made my pre-filter sponge cutting PPI10 into a strip, wrapping it around the intake with black zip ties. If you want it neater you can use fishing line to sow a seam (doesn't need to be great needle work) and then trimming the excess sponge away.
