I know this question has already come up in the past but has anybody come up with a good fix to prevent small fish/shrimp being sucked into the overflow which does not...or at least minimally impairs the skimming function of the unit?

I used stainless steel mesh cut and bent into shape, it minimally impairs the flow and stops big shrimp being sucked in. The same stuff that you can buy for attaching moss:

Tbh I gave up on the idea as I was cleaning it so frequently and opted to just pick out the silly shrimp when the sponge got clogged.

There isn't really a shrimp-safe surface skimmer design, maybe an overflow box/down-tube

Any shrimp/fry protection measures will always compromise surface skimming ability though. Up to you if the trade off is worth it, it definitely is if your baby shrimp are valuable to you and you don't mind more frequent cleaning.

Thanks mate, I might have to give that a go and see how I get on. I'll try and get hold of the most coarse mesh I can which is just small enough to not allow my smallest inhabitants through. Worse case if it doesn't work out at least I'll still have the extra flow in my tank and just cut my losses ha

Sounds interesting, how do you do that?
