We have some 4kdh solution we bought from Aqua Essentials in 2011, is this still okay or should I buy some more?

If it has been sealed and no water has evaporated then I would assume it will be ok. It is probably just a dilute solution of potassium carbonate.

its been opened, so I guess I may as well get a new bottle?

After adding the reagent to the 4kdh water it turns green rather than blue.

Make your own!

dKH 4 Recipe -

Add 6g of Sodium Bicarbonate to 1L of distilled water, giving you a 200dKH solution. Take 10ml of that 200dKH solution and add it to 490ml of distilled water, you now have a 4dKH solution.

If using Potassium Bicarbonate its 7.2g to 1L to get the 200dKH solution.

Sodium Bicarbonate - 0.03g per Litre = dKH1
Potassium Bicarbonate - 0.036g per Litre = dKH1
