Hi

few weeks ago I decided to completely rework my tank and try something new. Previous versions of this tank can be seen in my introduction post.

The idea was to create a nice tank which doesn't require too much maintenance. It's not really a low tech because I'm injecting CO2 and add some ferts but the light is not too strong.

Setup:
Tank: Dennerle NanoCube 30l (30x30x35 cm)
Light: Dennerle 11w (8hours a day, 7am - 10am and 4pm - 9pm)
Filter: Eden 501
Substrate: Dennerle Deponit mix and Dennerle Scaper's Soil plus white gravel (1-1,3mm)
Hardscape: Seiryu stone and Savanna wood
CO2: complete set for SodaStream from CO2Art currently running nonstop at about 1 bubble every 2-3 seconds.
Ferts: Tropica Specialized and Premium - 1 squirt a week of each 1 day apart

Flora
Anubias barteri var. nana
Microsorum pteropus
Rotala rotundifolia
Valisneria nana
Bucephalandra wavy leaf
Christmas moss
Cryptocoryne wendtii green

Fauna
9x Boraras urophthalmoides
8x Corydoras pygmaeus
11x Neocaridina davidi var. Orange

No 1 lesson I learned when setting this up was that it's much better to have more hardscape material then less and it's quite difficult(at least for me) to imagine how it will all look when buying harscape.
So it's not entirely what I wanted but in the end I like it.

Unpleasant surprise on day 1 - background foil show lot's of defects, leftover glue form previous background and especially 2 squares where the foil was taped together :( I'll redo it at next bigger maintenance

Day 4 - a bit of rescape and replanting
06 day 4 rescape.jpg

Day 12 - starting to see some new growth pretty much everywhere except for Valisneria nana

Day 20 - Today, Rotala ready for trim I guess. There was a bit of brown algea on crypts and rotala but shrimps added on monday cleansed it quite quickly

Hope you like it,feedback welcome

I think the hardscape looks great and in proportion. Once the plants fill out I think you'll see the difference. Putting too much hardscape in a nano can cause dead spot issues.

Thanks.
So far it looks like there are no dead spots, I can see CO2 floating everywhere but let's see what happens when grown in.

Very nice tank, i also have an nano cube 30 from Dennerle. Very natural look. Is there a reason why you use the little Dennerle spray bar, over the clear one which you get whit the filter. I see that you also have the cleaning tool in the spray bar, isnt this causing any flow problems?.

I use Dennerle spray bar simply for convenience - I didn't want spraybar above rotala cause it would push it forward and in previos version of this tank I had problems with flow breaking the plants or pulling them from substrate(without a spraybar though). So by using Dennerle spraybar I didn't have to cut the one from Eden - I'm still considering using it but probably on the right side not in the back.
Thanks for the hint about the cleaning tool - removed it today and the flow seems to be a bit better:thumbup:

So the tank is 1 month old and doing quite ok. Valisneria wasn't doing well, pretty much all the leaves died but there alre couple of new leaves an side shots so let's see how it recovers.
A bit of BBA on anubias an some crypt leaves.
I found a baby shrimp in the filter while cleaning it so I added a bit of filter foam on the inlet.

Weekly maintenance and trimming rotala heavily, as longest stems were almost at the front glass. Also trimmed christmas moss on the wood.
This is how it looks now. Forgot to take picture before trimming:(

Forgot to mention that Valisneria nana is starting to show some growth. Old leave are gone, I cut some remaining leaves as they were dying anyway but there are already 5 or 6 new plants growing.
I was already thinking about replacement plant but so far patience has won:)

I did a weekly water change today, not much to talk about, everything going nice and steady.
Here's a photo of this week.

Looking good @Juraj C. , the plants are coming in strong! Is the white backing permanent? I'd be curious to try a black to really bring out the green and capture the shadows?mood lighting :)

I'm considering getting this tank since with the tank only you get
  • Top cover glass
  • Base protection sheet (foam)
  • Black decorative foil
Do you use the glass cover? It's just I would want a HOB filter but I'm not sure if there would be enough space for one.

Thanks. No the background is not permanent, it's a static foil. I previously had a black background and wanted a change and I currently like it like this. One of advantages is that CO2 bubbles are not visible as much as they were against black background.

There's definitely not enough space HOB filter when using the glass cover. There's only few millimeters on each side, barely enough to put CO2 tubing in. I use external filter and I had to move the cover to the front, so it's overhanging the front of the tank by about 1-1.5cm. I never used a HOB so I don't know how much space that would need. You could always cut the cover to your needs, I guess.
Here's how it looks.

I noticed some leaves of Cryptocoryne wendtii green are going brown. Older leave as well as small fresh ones. See pics.
Is this normal or some kind of deficiency?
Thanks for any hints.

Hi!
Very nice nano. I like very much the stones.
Regarding Cryptocoryne, could be so called "Cryptocoryne diseas". What is the water hardness? Cryptocoryne have no special
demand for CO2 or light but is doing well over 10-15, even up to 30 dH. Try to cut the affected leaves and keep 4-5 young leaves.
A supplement of iron could help.

Thanks Silviu.
My water is hard. Based on data from water supplier it's 15 °dH so that shouldn't be a problem, I guess.
I'm dosing Tropica Specialized/Premium, alternating them on daily basis.
I'll do a bit of research on the disease you mentioned.

Weekly maintenance yesterday, cleansed the filter and hoses as well. trimmed the moss on wood a bit.
More crypts leaves turning brown, but I don't think its the crypt disease - no melting, even brown leaves continue to grow. Ideas welcome.
I'm dosing Tropica Specialised and Premium, both at about 3 pumps(3,6ml) a week of each, plus few(10-15) drops of easy carbo daily.

Here's a current pic:

I was wondering how to make rotala more bushy? I trim it once it reaches the surface, last time 3 weeks ago and most likely next week again. Should I do it more often?
Thanks for any hints and tips.

It looks better.

Regarding Rotala, cut it one third high from the ground. It should gine new primordia and grow more thick.
This way you get strong, healthy plant, from the top of the plants, that can be re-planted. Cut it where you
can see aerian roots. Eliminate the leaves close to the cutting point and push it deep in substrate.
