Growing on mesh

Does anyone use mesh to grow carpet plants in? And how do you do it?

I have a load of mesh which my mosses when they were small arrived on but they have now come away.

I have struggled to grow hair grass and other carpet plants mainly because my golden barbs keep pulling it up. I have gathered some of it together and attached it to the mesh, hair grass facing upwards. Is this correct or should the hair grass be under the mesh?

Does the mesh need to be buried or just sat on top of the surface?

Thank you in advance for your help :)

I would plant as normal, then place the mesh over the top and make some "U" shapes from garden wire to peg the mesh down. Hopefully once the harigrass starts to grow it will come through the mess same principle as the moss grows on mesh pokes through the hole.
