Hello,

I am setting up a layout with 75% planted gravel and 25 % dead area with sand.

I want to create a small landscape on sand with lava rocks.
My question is if the sand can hold them in place when i fill the tank with water.
Now that sand is wet it can keep the stones in whatever dimension i want to.

Do i need something under the rocks to prevent collapsing?

Thank you

Two things come to mind Fred. Martin In China has done some mainly sand scapes in the Journals and check “Altitude” by James Findlay TGM YouTube were he uses Lava Stone

I would put some egg crate under them just in case.
That isnt a bad idea!
Maybe for few rocks that i want them to have a certain position and they cant stand by themselves.
Is there any issue with substrate circulation when using them?
I think that i can also hide some gravel under rocks because gravel is pretty more solid.

When I kept Malawi's in a 6x2x2 I had 100+kg of ocean rock all sat on egg crate, no matter how much they dug the stability of the rock was never in doubt.

In terms of circulation I have no idea tbh.

I use 10mm polystyrene under rocks to protect the glass from sharp points which can break the glass
