Journal Nano pond - 2020

Well I am Done in, started @8 and just sat down.
I used the Cardboard idea and worked well, saved the grass from getting churned up.
Garden is relatively done. Decided against a windy path, would be to finickity when mowing.
Got a Decent amout of gravel done, 1 more layer to do along the right border.
All Bulbs Planted etc.
Pond is in, and scaped. Managed to use all the moss and Hyrdo I have been growing on in the Daphnia tubs. And All the plants from my bedroom nano.
Have put in a few tiger lotus to see how they fair in the tub.
Waterfalls did not work out, set it all up and did not like it at all. So packed those back up for now, Will use them for something else.
It does give me the excuse to look into something else for the cascade.

Solar Pumps all hooked up and they are working well, just put them all in the center and let them gurgle away. I am happy with how it all looks, considering I have done myself and has taken a week to do.

Tomorrows List:
Finish off the Gravel
Relay the Patio outside the Consevatory properly.
Pressure wash the patio and main path.
Clean the gutters for the Consevatory.

And might pop to Wyevale, as have vouchers to use.

Nice one gill. Sounds like you have neen busy. And stoll going to be.

Apologies for not posting.Garden is done for now.
Have put in the cascade i wanted and used mature sintered glass bio media in all the tiers.
Hydro plants melted, but little planlets are growing.
Been busy keeping the ants at bay. They found more ways into the house, so have been treating those areas.
Need to mow the lawn in the morning and reseed it.

Some pix
Really happy with how it turned out, with doing it on my own. Just a few things to get.
If someone could tell me what the plants are that were already here, that would be great.
And also do I need to worry about whatever is growing at the side of the house in the gap.

Oh and the rambling looking one with small yellow flowers.

For the pond fountain I have used the mature filter media from the main tank. That I have been maturing in the trickle shower trays.

I am glad I did it. Was tanked on painkillers muscle relaxants vertigo meds thru it though. As without would never have been able to do it.

Need to mow the lawn rake and re seed it later on when a bit cooler.

Wow! That's quite the makeover, well done! I bet you get all sorts of new wildlife now you have some water available. It looks really good!

Here are some plant IDs...

This, as you probably know is a very happy looking cherry - if you want to eat those cherries you'll probably need to net it cos the birds like them too ;)

Can't quite make out what's in the back corner, but the one closer to the camera looks like it might be herb robert - which is a week/wild plant depending how you look at it.

I can never remember the name of the dark pink one, but the pale pink is an aquilegia - very pretty. You can get a massive range of colours from dark purple, through pinks and yellows so if you like it and would like more pick up a packet of seeds as they are very easy to grow. Your may self sow and come up in different colours but usually variations on the original so a mix packet will get you a wider range of colours. The yellow one in front in creeping butter cup - a perenial weed you probably want to pull out before it spreads. If you want some yellow then yellow alyssum would give you a similar shade without the weed like tendencies.

On the right there you have a sedum (ice plant), the butterflies and bees love them - it will most likely have pink flowers - you can get them in white too though. They are very easy to propagate if you want more - just break off a section of stalk and plant it - somewhere shady to start with or stick it in some water - it will soon grow roots.

Agree with the above for plant id's and the red flowering one is often called valerian although it's centranthus ruber (comes in white and pink as well), and the tree looks like an ash fraxinus excelsior. They are both quite commonly self seeded but the bees love centranthus and so do I.

Cheers guys for the help.
Should havevclarufied That the fruit trees I planted are cherry, plum, tayberry and gooseberry.
Just the other trees that have grown themselves.
The plant in the far corner is a weed that I don't mind it has reddish green leaves and tiny pink flowers.

It is mainly this tall one I wanted to know really and if I should keep it trimmed low

Gill that tree is the one I mentioned earlier, it's an ash and the one up the road from me is higher than the house who's garden it's in.

Ah right, thanks. will dig them out then. As there is one next to the consevatory.

Is it this... https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=991

If you like it then it's basically a wild form of hardy geranium (cranesbill). They come in various sizes and shades of whites, pinks purples and blues. Very pretty and quite tough. Would make a nice addition if you wanted to add more planting: https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/articles/graham-rice/perennials-and-bulbs/10-hardy-geraniums

Don't know the tree, sorry.

Yep thats the one, Thanks. I like them and as stated spread easily without having to do anything.

Also Happy with how much this has cost, only spent £350 on it so far. And that is with spending a good while sourcing everything online and using instore deals.
