Anyone know any good places near bath/bristol?
Try

Bath Aquatics
Hillier Garden Centre
Whiteway Road
Bath
BA2 2RG

OR

Maidenhead Aquatics
Wyevale Garden Centre
Hicks Gate
Keynsham
Bristol

Thanks for the help Lozbug :)

Hilliers I do visit- they are very poor quiality though. Their tanks are full of dead fish and they have virtually no plants and they are all not great condition.
The Maidenhead Aquatics is good, but definitely not up the the standards of anything I have seen on here!

dammit!!

damn. not fun huh

Shirley Aquatics is good, but that just past birmingham!

Re: Where to buy in the South West Chippenham

Hi all,
I dropped some plants off to Chippenham yesterday ("Pet Care" 1a St Paul Street, CHIPPENHAM, SN15 1LJ ) and they had some Otocinclus in, (they were £3.90 I think) and a few more unusual things, only ones I can remember, Croaking Gourami Trichopsis vittata, Parotocinclus jumbo, some really good quality Czech Rams.

It is only a very small small shop, sells mainly "bread and butter" fish and is not a specialist LFS, but the owner is a fish keeper and the fish are very well kept.

cheers Darrel

In Bristol itself there's quite a good shop down in Bedminster on North Street. Good range of oddball fish as well as the standards so well worth a look (I haven't been there for a year or so though). Also, Parkers Aquatics is pretty good, it's out in Iron Acton but is worth the trek if you can make it. Good range of pond and freshwater, discus too. Not sure if they do marine though (again, haven't been there for ages). Also got a nice range of wood and rocks and a load of lovely plants. Hope this helps, I'm sure you can find the exact addresses with a quick google search :)

There is a Dobbies in Shepton. I've been to a couple of their other stores and not been impressed but the aquatics section in Shepton is pretty good. The guy I spoke to there is really passionate and all their plant and fish stock looked to be in good condition. The downside is that they are a little expensive and are keen to sell the trendy gear. Lots of Biorbs and the like.

A recent discovery is Acres Supplies in Corsley, near Longleat/warminster. Good quatics section and Sam there really knows his stuff. He seems to have good networks as well and can get most things in. Good range in good condition and is happy to just chat and advize. Just don't go at the weekend unless you want to be pestered by the arrogant, pushy kids that work there then.

It is worth going just to see the Pauldarium that Sam has set up. Really neat tank, with guppies in the water and and a couple of little white tree frogs. Really attractive set up, with a fogger and plans to be self sustaining. Next time I'm there I'll take a camera and see if he minds me snapping some photos.

Aquator in Torquay, Devon is a great place, helpful staff and very knowledgable, a place where you are treated for what you know and not sold anything stupid. I guess the line is they are valid, ease, professional and honest. What more can you ask.

Try Just Aquatics in Castle Place, Trowbridge. Young bloke there George seems to know what he is talking about and is very keen. Bought some great bog wood and red wood root material

Like some one said devon as far as i know Isn't great for planted enthusiasts lol , we'll apart from aqua essentials, their based in crediton ,
I've been to Aquator , Exeter aquatics , maiden head , something fishy , and all the other small shops from Exeter to torquay and none of which really specialize in planted tanks and don't really know what your talking about , then you have pets at home , what a load of cod Sh** that is , they should be banned from selling plants and fish !! If someone knows of a decent place to visit then I will be happy to hear :) , also co2 refills , it's cheaper to buy a new FE from eBay every time rather then asking any of the above shops to refill ! So maybe there is somewhere that does cheap re fills , I don't know ?
Cheers

Would have to disagree with you. Emperor tropicals in plymouth are great and have just won practical fishkeeping magazine best retailer of the year. They stock all aquascaping stuff. All the seachem and ada products plus dones of plants, fish and even redmoor wood thats were I get mine

Hi all,
Homeleigh Garden Centre in the village of Dutson 2 mile NE of Launceston is very good.
https://www.homeleighonline.co.uk/aquatics.html
I'd bought an LED light unit from them and after about 2 months the transformer failed; I had the packaging but no receipt, paid cash and didn't know date of purchase. Walked in and they exchanged it without questions or quibbles; so on that basis I bought a filter off of them, and discovered it was cheaper in store than via their internet site. Apparently if they internet-sell too cheaply a well-known internet trader bans them from selling via their site and then sells the product themselves cheaper.

Good selection of fish and plants; 5-6 species of loach and about 8 sp of shrimp when I was there, although livestock isn't advertised on their site.

Porton aquatics, Porton Garden Centre, Porton, Salisbury SP4 0LA.

Its a bit in the middle of no where but its the best by far i have found in hampshire/wiltshire lots of scaping rocks/wood/roots, substrates, plants, lighting and they have a large reptile area so even more bits to use in the aquarium.

Impressed with Acres Aquatics at Corsley (near Longleat, Wiltshire). Chap behind the counter seems very knowledgeable re planted aquariums.
Bought an Oase 600 Thermo and will be back to buy Tropica substrate and soil when I'm ready. Stock Oase and Eheim. Nice selection of fish too.

Are there stores in the south west that have an aquascaping dojo to test out layouts before buying the hardscape?
