I bought about ten of these last summer for my tank.
They were small and beautiful.
Now they are large and beautiful.
And I have no idea what they are.
I have spent hours on the internet looking,
But so far I have not found anything.
They seem like tetras of some kind,
But the fins are slightly...
Would excel dip be good.
I have ripped up most of the carpet plants and my bladderwort. I put it in a bowl of water, and wondering if I should venture into bleach, peroxide, or excel 20:1?
In my spare time...
I need help.
After my move, I have not had time to hang my lights. So instead they were propped atop the tank blowing too much light into the tank. Work has kept me busy and I figured I would deal when I had free time.
Now I am free, but the tank has been taken over by thread algae. Crap! I...
I just moved and now my fish live on the 1st floor.
I have a water but on the ground floor.
The tank is roughly 13 meters from the but.
I bought 15 meters of hose.
Basically I want to fill my tank with collected rain water and need a pump that I can hook up to transfer the...
Hard to say. But I might say it is the solenoid,
Although it does click when I turn the power on and off...
The co2 comes out, but not strong, like the valve is clogged maybe.
Guess I could take it apart tonight and fiddle with it.
Would like any helpful hints to rule out...
Curious if anyone has a spare solenoid regulator,
Or knows how to fix a broken one.
I have two now that have died.
I would not mind buying something good.
And when I say good, I mean something that will last.
7 months later.
Sorry for the delay. Full on work load for he last four months. Neglected the tank, but it has done well.
I had planted Cuba and initially it grew well. I feared too much light in the tank because of black hair algae. Raised the lights for a month, and got rid of algae but...
Over the winter I broke down my eheim 2217 system and split the livestock and plants into two smaller tanks. one very small HOB and another with a sponge filter. over the 5 months til now, I have had great success with HC Cuba, Riccia and Java moss. now that the sun is out, I have started up the...
I'm doing it daily, then I plan on stitching them together, to get a better feel for growth. And I will add other plants soon, and animate the planting as well.
This is the 29th. Added a spot light in the end, and messed with the grade.
Also did a water change first off.
Since the tank is...
Realised yesterday, that I could easily set up a time lapse in the shed where the tank is, because the computer is also there. Set up the camera to tether to the computer, and it is easy to document without a card. Curious to see different growth rates and if anything goes south, it would be...
Water cleared and here are some images of the tank...
I would like to add these...
Alternanthera reineckii . Roseafolia
Ludwigia repens 'Rubin'
Hopefully it will look like this...
Yesterday I pulled the plants from the smaller tank and placed them in the new tank. I also took the java moss that was attached to a dead bonsai trunk, and anchored it on the ground of the new tank. Some riccia has established itself in the java moss, so it makes a nice ground covering for the...
Two months later, and I finally have gotten back to this tank. It seemed every day another procrastic idea kept me busy. I have toyed with building a sump... building architectural elements for placement in the tank... Or selling the tank altogether.
But it dawned on me today that I have...
Is the old 2213 green canister acrylic?
Could it be glued to acrylic?
Could it be run upside down?
I want to try to take my old 2213 that had a cracked bottom and make a open system sump/moving bed filter. I cut the bottom out of the canister, and want to glue it into a sump system.
It is all still on the drawing board.
But the tank is 61cm x 51cm footprint.
The base is about 70cm high made of 18mm birch ply.
I was hoping to build an acrylic sump almost the same size as the tank in the space below. The tank has been drilled as I mentioned, and I will be drilling two...
Is there a formula to work this element into the mix?
The flow only needs to go up about 30mm with no bends.
I was going to get the largest pump possible, and then t off a valve to adjust the flow. Just looking for some reassurance.
Also another quick one.
I have a tank drilled from...
This winter I have been trying to source out dead bonsai to make moss trees. But the bonsai people do not take kindly to the idea. O at least not willing to admit that they are in possession of any. I found one on the stoop of a house in the fall, and built it out, and it has grown in nicely...
That he been the consciences online. I'm also keen to build the sump as large as the tank.
One concern maybe is making sure to get a variable sped pump to control the flow, not so much of the water in the tank, but the water leaving the tank. It would seem that it might be a mess.
Still waiting to pay of my tax bill before I embark on another tank related project.
But in the meantime I am reading researching and designing possible builds.
I ran across an article about moving bed filters, and I really want to try it out.
I would like to build a large one in a...
But from what I have read,
If you keep them damp, they will attach to rock or wood.
Just curious of how long that might take.
I am experimenting with an Ammano method of finely chopping the moss and Riccia and dabbing it into crevices in stone and wood, and a shell...with the hopes that it...
That looks great.
I just went to the adc here in London and was asking the guys there the same question. They basically said the same thing. Only reason I was curious was based on a topic about it from Tom Barr.
Also at the fish shop, he guy gave me a large clump of hc. More than I can use...
I am planning on trying a DSM on a very small tank for shrimp.
I want to grow
I have read that you can add liquid carbon and ferts to your spray bottle to mist the plants occasionally, but I want to make sure about the proportions...
And the ends instead of using caps which would reduce the hole and make it difficult to clean, I just bought 12mm T's and on the open end I shoved a whiskey cork into it. They are perfectly sealed and very tight. No water drips of any kind.
Inside it looks like this...
It has been running...
If I plan on growing plants DSM is there any prep that I need to preform on the soil?
I am soaking some akadama in dry salts. I have oscote should I mix that in? Ad do I need mulm below the substrate?
I just drilled my 140l tank and so far it is great.
I got the plumbing from fish fur and feather.
No leaking on bulkheads.
I have 12mm goin in and out. And did not glue the strainers or the spray bar in the tank.
With the filter turned off and the valves shut below. You can reach into the tank...
Sorry for the absence. Tax time left me a bit skint, and with lots of time to rethink things. Initially I had a landscape planned. Built something with an experiment using styrofoam as a filler.
I Siliconed the styro together, carved a landscape, then siliconed it to the floor of the tank...
I'd rather not have to buy new media.(apart from the floss)
But at the moment boiling media in a diluted bleach.
Along with the blue sponges, which seem pretty hardy.
I'll see how they fare.
What about just bleaching the old media?
Or running it through the dishwasher, then cycling it with water a few days?
I'm in no hurry to get back up an running.
I have soil soaking and need to test my flow and plumbing.
I have been busy taking care of too many things this month.
Broke down my tank, and left my eheim 2217 off with stagnate water in it. I assume the bacteria is all dead (hence the smell). If i want to get it back up and running, what should I do?
Yea I found that guy on practical fish keeping...
Not quite what I am thinking...
I pulled the castings from the mould today... Has been a while since I have done any casting. Did not use enough release, so had to chip a bit of the cast in order to get it out. Thought about...
I managed to track down everything. Thank you amazon. Figure I'd make the feet soup then chuck the akadama in and let it stew till it either gets warmer. The next tank will not be rushed. (Personal reminder)
Today I started on a new tank.
After Christmas holidays I came home, and found that my spraybar had done great job of watering the carpet. One rug doctor and dehumidifier later, room is back to normal. But I see this as an opportunity for change.
Broke down previous tank and sold it on eBay...
I and starting a new tank,
And wanted to give jamesC's akadama a go.
I am on a time limit due to plants that need to be back in soil soon...
These are the salts I need...
120g Calcium carbonate
105g Magnesium sulphate
30g Potassium sulphate
I have the Magnesium sulphate, but need the other...
I still have the led lights hanging above the spot where the tank was.
I reckon I should just sit the boxes under that...
As far as fertz...
I have macro and micro mixtures plus easy carb
What would be the best with those options?
Waiting to build up a new tank...
Gently pulled most to the plants and placed them in tank water in semi transparent shoe boxes. Closed and in direct sunlight..(if the clouds would move).
How long will they last?
What can I do to prolong the life?
Hoping to have tank up by next week. But...
I've read that people have had luck with it on the outtake of the canister.
But you need to make sure that both the canister and the pump are of equal LPH.
And yes I have thought of a sump. If I had a sump over the holidays, then the water in my tank would have stayed high enough not to expose...
Initially in my previous tank.
I had a 70cm spraybar across the back and it circulated beautifully.
the intake on the left worked fine, but I had a dead space in the right corner.
Which made me think that splitting the intake to cover both corners would solve that. The 2217 is slightly over...
I have an inline diffuser at the moment,
But I am contemplating a pinwheel diffuser in the loop just before the out of the 2217.
But that might be a long time down the road.
My OCD obsession at the moment is a clean rimless edge. Wiping it down every night... So plumbing it from the bottom as...
Just thinking aloud and missing your concern...
If I turn off the canister. Reach in, and unscrew the spray bar or intake from the bulkhead, clean it, then screw it back in, and turn the canister back on... Where would that go wrong? The canister would still be connected from the...
I am planning a new tank,
And was thinking of drilling the bottom to hide the intake and spraybar...
Would this work...(see picture)
I figure that if the spraybar shot up,
And bounced off an 45 degree glass wall siliconed in the rear of the tank,
That it would hopefully circle back round to...
Got a rug doctor...
Ran it over and over the rug with chemicals and febreeze. And bicarbonate soda...
Still smells a bit.
I had laid a layer of sand under solid that I had capped with gravel.
I checked the gravel and soil, but thought I might keep the sand to put in the new tank.
Happy holidays and new year.
I went to the states for the holidays, and came back to a bit of a disaster.
I have two tanks.
One is 100l open top rimless
The other is a closed 32l shrimp tank.
We were gone for two weeks.
I would imagine after the first week.
The water in the larger tank had...
So as it turn out,
My two ADF have been busy shagging in the tall grass, then laid some eggs in it.
I hear that they tend to eat them, which is great on account that I will be gone for a fortnight, and I was worried about them dying of hunger.
Tomorrow is Saturday.
I really would like to track down a quality bag of shrimp substrate for a collection of RCS that I need to get up and running before I run off on holiday.
Can anyone point me to a shop in London that specialises in shrimp?
Have not really changed anything in the circulation of my tank.
Co2 has been stable...
Water just moves the surface, but not breaking the surface.
Only thing I can think is I am not getting proper dispersion from my up inline co2 injector.
The floss actually serves as a media to slow down my flow a bit.
The 2217 really pushes water through my 100l tank.
The floss slows it down and polishes up my water.
The sponge is in transit, so I can't really start cultivating.
If it doesn't come today, I may pop down to ADC and...
the hinge pin in all this, is I was given about 20 shrimp that are a variety of sizes, but too small to go into the big tank. (Strainer)
I have less than 7 days to set them up in a low maitence living environment until I return in the new year.
I could put it on the intake, or make room...
I leave to go stateside on the 20th for a fortnight.
Which means I don't have time to cultivate bacteria in the BSF.
I am thinking two options:
No filter, just an air stone.
I could pull out some nice old raggedy floss from the 2217, and make a DIY sponge filter.
I bought a BSF to try my hand at breeding shrimp in a 32l tank.
Could I put the sponge filter in my 2217 eheim canister on the larger tank to gather bacteria to help cycle the smaller one? If so how long would I have to leave it in the canister?
What about adding the second pump to be a needle wheel co2 diffuser?
I am running a eheim 2217 out a 80cm spraybar on the back. The flow is just about enough. But I wanted some type of inline co2 plus was contemplating an inline purigen reactor down the line, and I have been researching adding a...
So they say that it is pearling if it is on your plants...
But I have small bubbles on my drop checker and my spray bar as well.
It is all over my java moss,
But I really thing it is the co2 just collecting on the leave...
Mind you which is good! (Isn't it?)
I'm just not believing it to be...
No worries. Just playing out options in my head. Might try hiding a semi surface container of soil for it.
My tank is 40cm high. Toying with the notion of adding another 20cm of amphibious growth on top of that.
As it turns out, it is the enchino.
I was contemplating planting it high up on a price of driftwood so that it can grow out of the tank.
The driftwood has manny cracks. Could I jam soil in those cracks and plant the enchino there with much success, or does it need soil? Or is there a way...
Try soaking the atomiser in bleach overnight. I know it sounds mad, but it worked for me. Mine was not working, and blew my bubble counter up with the over load of co2 pressure. I soaked it then also took a bit of blue mechanical filter material on a string, and ran it through the tube a few...
Yes I think you might be spot on.
They do start quite red as they start, but do loose there red over time.
I was maybe thinking that it might be nice to plant them so that they emerge above the water line.
Pardon my ignorance, but I am not sure what these are... They stand about 8 to 12 high. Very nice and they grow well... my question is This... Since I brought them home and planted them, the new growth looks nothing like the original leaves, which were green and elliptical. The new leaves are...
Changing my bio load out for shrimp...
Does anyone have any to sell, or
Can anyone let me know where I might find cherry red shrimp?
I have seen that there are people on aquatic classified, curious if anyone has had any of these?
I have 4 tiger barbs, and they will eat shrimp under a certain size. I think anything over 2cm are safe.
Jumangi pets in kilburn have amino that are quite large. TB ignore them completely.

I have the lights low,
But all I have read about brown algae on the web,
Is that it is usually fuelled by low light.
I have brown algae on the gravel, leaf edges and tank glass just below gravel on the front. And I also have the stringing hair algae on the tips of...
Could this be done....?
If I put a t valve on my intake to may canister filter, (eheim 2217) turn it off,
Redirect the water to a flex tube turn it back on so that I can then use the flex tube to clean the tank...
Is this mad?
Or has it been done.
Seems like it would make sense, and would...
Thanks for the info on the day off water change dosing.
I did a routine tidy up on Sunday.
Trimmed off all the dead leaves, and leaves with black hair algae.
Dropped 5 more amano shrimp in.
Traded in the three Corys I had for some neon tetras.
The Corys were doing a number on my substrate...
I have been chasing my algae problem for three months now,
And I have reached
a point where I can see the light. Or at least maybe I am not prone to jump off the deep end at every site of algae.
I have 12 shrimp swimming around at night and they seem to keep things somewhat in balance. I have...
I want to add to this, with water tests I performed.
Finally got my ph,kh,gh test kits
Here are my results:
I want to test these on water from the tap.
As I would assume that the CO2 injection will have some affect on the kh.

Yes I think you are right. It is 10 hours,
But they ramp up and down on a controller over the course of 240 minutes. (On each end)... So theoretically it is far less than 10 hours.
I did just recently drop the percentage to 60% and I have been easycarbo local injections on brown plants and...
