I would like to run a sump from now on mainly as a way of keeping my tank tidy by having my heaters, and filter inlets etc. in it. I am wondering why I do not see fresh water tank setups with a sump? Can anyone clarify this for my please before I go drilling holes into my tank?
Thanks in advance.
I agree with milla. Lots of shrimp. At least 100. Once thread algae hits the moss you are in trouble. I just removed about 2 buckets of moss from my tank today because it just gets infested with thread algae and no matter how much you hassle it, it stays deep inside.
Riccia is even more messy...
Re: Volcanic springs in CA, Hat Creek source, aquatic plant
Some of those species I have seen growing not 2 km's from my house here. Some I didnt know the names of.. Thanks
yeah it sux pretty bad... I searched for it locally last time around and aswell as ebay and had no luck... I just did a search for it again on ebay and sure enough 2 came up in the UK.
I will give it some more thought. I have enough dry salts to get me by for a while whilst I decide what to do... I found that saucing my salts last time cost an aweful lot because I had to get some of it from your side of the world.
Re: Volcanic springs in CA, Hat Creek source, aquatic plant
over here the flora and fauna endure temps of about 4 C to 30+ in the water.... maybe the stuff over there can be adaptable to moderate temps in the tank?
Re: Volcanic springs in CA, Hat Creek source, aquatic plant
Man I am drooling at your photos. Imagine all of the mosses growing in the waterfall :jawdrop
I wonder what the inverts look like living in that stream of awesomeness?
I would love to know more about this place.
I have checked my cupboard and noticed that I have a heap of mono potassium phosphate. This is what I need to put into the tank isn't it? I will have to store it in a different liquid bottle than the dinosaur pee right?
Basically my question relates to lighting but I have put it here because there are other factors which come into play.
Any advice is welcome but basically my question relates to lighting.
Cheers!

There was alot of talk on an australia website http://www.rainbowfish.info/forum/viewt ... =15&t=1784 about connecting Dave Wilson from aquagreen with sellers in ohter countries. The last I checked it had gone fairly well so far with red tape and what not.
People here are concerned about...
This is a pic of Glossostigma diandrum from http://www.aquagreen.com.au (awesome plant and fish supplier here in Aus). My variety doesn't look like this one.
This is the glosso elatiniodes Dave from aquagreen has listed which I think looks to be the one I have. The flowers also look to be the...
Here are some pics of this moss which I found about a year ago and trialed in my last tank. I have never seen it online before. It is somewhat similar to star moss but is also unique. I refer to it as "Spire moss" as it grows in a spire type growth.
I have no idea how to fix it to stuff...
Hi guys. My next scape will primarily be of local species of plants native to Australia. I have alot that I have found over the last year or so and I have decided to use this Glosso. I just need a confirmation that it is Glossostigma Elatinoides before I go ahead. I am sure that it grows...
I run a 500 ltr tank and I have found that, like the others have said, the physical maintenence of a large tank is large. But also it pays to spend some time observing the tank and plan the maintanence ahead of time because there is so much more to take in. If an animal dies in there then you...
Oh, :D That explains alot. As a rule I don't try to grow anything in my tank unless it lives right on or in the water. Most of the mosses I get live mostly on rocks a few inches above the water line. No further than 2 or 3 metres.
Yeah Garuf is probably right there. There are 50 known species of Fissidens in Australia alone and the one you are growing could be the one from singapore.
High light, co2 and ferts is how I grow mine but they will grow in low light with no co2 and ferts. My water temp is 25C.
I bought myself a canon 550D last week and decided to go on another moss hunt and get some better pictures and video for you guys.
Here is a HD link to youtube:

Some willow moss:

In Australia a common brand name here is AquaOne. I bought their biggest and most expensive cansiter filter and the manual didnt tell me that I needed to equalise the pressure in the tank to the outside atmosphere when I do a filter clean. Which ended up in me breaking one of the plastic clips...
I live in a difference country than you guys but if I see a beautiful shrimp that is unique I want it. Whether it is from a LFS, online store or a forum.
Re: Discussion: What's your favourite part of the hobby and
I love the creative side of designing my scape. I enjoy the scientific sice and devouring as much knowedge as possible from the internet. I am very compedative by nature and get motivation from seeing other peoples great scapes. I...
I had a fairly low instance of algae in my tank in the beginning months (had some brown dust algae and BBA)up until about 2 months ago when I reduced my 400 ltr tanks flow down to 800 ltrs/hr (as rated on pump) during the night so my newly planted HC wouldnt uproot. It all went to hell from...
Thanks steve. For the sake of being easy to understand I wrote a sloping explanation of it although I actually intend to go for a look similar to this:

I have been planning my next scape which I will be starting sometime after october. I have given up on this scape because I have been unable to grow HC in it and it has been overrun with algae. I also have to wait a few months for my shrimperies shrimp to grow to a size where the fish wont eat...
I have been meaning to buy what is called "pandafilm" to use as a backdrop for my tank for the last 6 months or so but live way away from a hydroshop where they sell it.
For those who do not know what it is it is a thin plastic (less than 1/2 mm thick) which is jet black on one side and pure...
I would like to know how to use this stuff as we buy it in 10 ltr drums as a sanitiser. The strength is something like this:
Gluteraldehyde 150g/l
quartenary ammonium compounds 100 g/l
I am pretty sure the quartenary ammonium conpounds is just part of the gluteraldehyde.
Stuffed if I am gonna...
I had too much liquid in my drop checker and when I reduced it to 1/2 full it turned pure yellow (a day after I cranked it a bit) and a shrimp died. So I think I have it figured. Thank guys!
I am running what I think is about 30-40 ppm of co2 in my high tech tank although I sometimes wonder because I am not sure whether it is pale green or slightly yellow. What I am, saying is that I dont know if I amk running it at 30-40 ppm or something like 20ppm.
My fish supplier makes his own mixture which is pretty potent. I love it because it is dirt cheap. I think it was $4.50 for 125 ml which only needs 1 drop per 10 litres 3 times a week. Beats buying overpriced flourish.
I absolutely love shrimp. I think they rock. I also like Kuhli Loaches, I think they are cool too as they clean up excess waste in the tank. I never see mine though, they say you need to keep a few of them because they are shy and only come out at night.
I have been doing some research on Fissidens in Australia. We have a great site here for Rainbowfish and there are guys there who go out of expeditions finding flora and fauna. One of the gurus there says there are over 50 recorded species of Fissidens in Australia. Crazy...
Hi guys, we received 2 days of good rainfall here which means that FishBeast is on the aquatic moss hunt! This time I wanted to share with you a few pix and 2 youtube videos of my adventure.
The first picture is of some rapids here with some Fissidens and Willow moss here and there.
A fairly...
Hi, I live in Australia and I am running an Australian Bio-Type tank. I have wendii, HC and anubias nana in there aswell which arent from here, but they look good.
I buy most of my plants from a site here in Aus so I can't help you there. I get alot of my plants locally from my own little...
I have a 6x2x1.5 foot tank (6mm glass) and if you had seen some of the places I have had it you would probably freak out. When I have had it on floor boards I try to even the weight out over 3 4x2 inch beams. I always have a layer of foam under the tank to absorb the uneveness.
Good luck!
I get alot of ideas from other peoples scapes but I also spend alot of time sitting in front of my tank running ideas through my mind. Alot of the time I feel as though I am feeling blind in the dark as serious planted tanks are something which are new to me. In all honesty I would have to say I...
I would convince the missus that I need another tank for hospitalisation purposes. Then stock it with fish and then say. Look I need another tank for hospitalisation purposes. :D
I thought I had some bad blunders but you guys make mine look like nothing!
I have done the usual and forgot about the tap running into my tank and drenched the carpet a few times.
I have forgotten to turn my filter on for a few days.
After doing some maintanence I bumped the inlet gause...
