assassin snails are great mine have never become a problem and i have small groups in 3 tanks :)
i agree the thing is each filter has the same number of parts (give or take a little :) ) so each filter has the same life expectancy if estimated...
i have gone with 2 makes cleaning the filters easter i do alternate ones each month and means if there is a problem with one the other takes some...
i leave every thing running dose the prime add the water ( via mixer taps ) i do this on my shrimp tank discus tank and my shrimp tank i still do...

i used to do it this way before i got hma filter its importent to dose the declorinator for the whole tank volume not the volume of the added water
