Fitting a photoperiod round my life!

Hi Chris, I did look at doing that but went with the standard timers. Mainly because I now have CO2, 2 sets of Lights and now Moonlights all on timers. Which means I need 4 channels. I got some nice timers from B&Q which are no wider than a normal plug so I can have them all on one standard...

    Ikea LED's

They don't look waterproof to me, you'd have to mount them outside the tank and away from water splashes.

That's excellent and it comes with the power adaptor and everything! Thanks, I'm ordering one now! :D

Fitting a photoperiod round my life!

Hmm, I think that might be the answer long term. I'll try the short morning burst first (I can do it with just 30W rather than the whole 60W) I'll let you know how I get on.

Fitting a photoperiod round my life!

Because 10:30pm is the estimate of my bedtime if I'm home by then, more and more often these days I'm not home that early! I'd have a better chance if I put them on 6:30am - 6:30pm but then I'm in no mood to relax while watching them as I'm rushing to get out the door! This sounds like a good...

Fitting a photoperiod round my life!

Ok, so I'm working silly hours at the moment and I'm getting to the point where I hardly ever see my tank lights on! I've got relatively low light levels; 60W over a 125l ~30USG tank and currently they're on for 12 hours a day (8:30am -8:30pm) with a half hour dawn/dusk period included at...

    Optimum Lighting WPG

While I do agree with you Clive and I know that supercoley has done some tests on disproving the theories of low/high light plants. I can't help but notice the improvements in my red leafed plants when I changed my lamps for fresh ones in my 2WPG 30G tank. You do have to increase the nutrients...

    Optimum Lighting WPG

Ok so more lighting it is then. Personally I'd go for the 156W luminaire, start off with 3 out of 4 bulbs and if you find you need/want the 4th then use that too. The light distribution should be fine. The way you talk about the tetratec you don't seem happy with it so I wouldn't recommend...

    Optimum Lighting WPG

Are your plants showing signs that they need more light or is it simply that you would like to upgrade. If it's the former then I would personally aim for the 150w mark (you can't use potentiometers on most fluorescent ballasts so check before you implement that plan - however you can usually...

    Optimum Lighting WPG

If you want amano levels then this site suggests aiming for about 150w. However with that amount of lighting you would need a good ferts and CO2 regime. Optimum lighting is very dependant on what you want to achieve and what the rest of your system consists of. The figure above is what Amano...

Advice please - Should I add lighting? ***Updated with pics!

Shouldn't have thought so, it's not extra lighting, it's just a replacement of the original one. Still only about 1WPG. For mosses etc it should be fine and the most I'd add is some trace. Now if you want to go high tech.... then that's a completely different matter

So you can easily see the make/model when you need to change it without having to take the bulb out ;)

Advice please - Should I add lighting? ***Updated with pics!

Re: Advice please - Should I add lighting? A reflector is probably a good idea, not so much for heat reasons, more for making the most of the light reasons.

Advice please - Should I add lighting? ***Updated with pics!

Re: Advice please - Should I add lighting? It's good to see someone doing their homework so thoroughly :D Yes those were the light fittings I was talking about and I think that wall looks a good place to connect the light clips too. Just make sure the light wont actually be in the water when...

Advice please - Should I add lighting? ***Updated with pics!

Re: Advice please - Should I add lighting? Right well I don't know much about that tank but a quick google suggests thatyou're not the only one to have had problems with the lights. The light that was in there before was a 15w and you could probably replace it with something similar. You'll...

Advice please - Should I add lighting? ***Updated with pics!

Re: Advice please - Should I add lighting? Ok, so yes fish usually are a bit startled by the lights coming on and going off but nothing that lasts more than a few moments. For a tank such as yours you should be able to have the lights on for just a few hours a day - maximum would be about...

Budget tube for Juwel Rio 400?

It would be interesting to do the maths and see how many bulb changes it would take to make back the cost of replacing the fittings with standard length ones... You can get a dual watertight 54W T5 ballast for £36-£60 depending on brand (prices from thelivingseas.com) and bulb prices would be...

Budget tube for Juwel Rio 400?

My local B&Q stock a respectable range of T5 and T8 lamps, it might be worth having a look in your local one.

    High or low lighting

I would also be concerned about the different filter/flow requirements between a fighter fish and a planted tank. If you're not adding CO2 and ferts then it might not be such an issue having a low flow rate which will suit the fighter but many keepers of these fish actually modify their normal...

    LED lighting?

This was what I was wondering! You'd have to get the right LEDs though, the bog standard ones wouldn't be bright enough. It was actually something I was considering doing when my jewel light unit first failed - but timing was bad and I never got round to it. But you could also make your own...

    Moonlight

He comments that he gets a spotlight effect. If you want to avoid this then take some fine sandpaper to the LEDs as it will help diffuse the light. LD. The guys on ebay might be cheap but if you're a 'leccy person then you're liable to have LED's & resistors lying around anyway. Been meaning...

Lighting on a Juwel Rekord 70

Hi, unfortunately you can't just increase the bulb wattage, you can only use a bulb which is matched to your ballast (the bit which powers the lights). I'm guessing that yours will be similar to mine (an old Rekord 70) and so will require a 15w 18" T8 bulb. If you don't want to start modifying...

Cheap HO T5 fluorescent tubes - Update with photos

Excellent, thanks for the fast reply (also good that lampspecs have them as they also do cheap energy saving and halogen bulbs which I also need :) ) One of the things I like about my hagen at the moment is that it's dying so is a nice gentle prod into the world for the fish... I may end up...

Cheap HO T5 fluorescent tubes - Update with photos

Does anyone know where I could get a bulb similar to the 880 in the 18" 15w T8 format? The highest K I can seem to find is 865 = 6,500K which is quite a way off the 8000k of the 880. Osram def don't do them, I've checked their webpage. I currently have 2 arcadia freshwater and a (dying) hagen...
