    The upgrade!

Ok, so I'm still alive, I'm still keeping fish and I still have a high tech tank... sort of! We're in the process of renovating the kitchen diner so the tank has moved to the only other space in the flat - the bathroom. Poorly taken, with water spots all over and cucumber fishing lines but...

    DIY amazon root

Ahhh, it's because you were talking about buying lots of substrat-Pro and planting vallis that I assumed there would be other plants. My bad, as they say assumption is the mother of the biggest mistakes ;)

    DIY amazon root

Nice and atmospheric, can't wait to see it with all the plants in. I like the roots dangling down, it's a different effect from the usual and means you can play around with the plants rising to meet them. It might be more difficult to scape this way than the other but that's half the fun of...

    The upgrade!

Not far but it is a different water company which is why I suspect that. Some of my snails have also kicked it so it might be copper in the supply. As I say, I'm just keeping on top of maintenance, the fish seem fine so I don't think it's a nitrate/nitrite/ammonia problem, though I haven't...

Well life is nice and busy at the moment, I'm in the final throws of thesis writing and buying my first house. In the meantime I've moved into my sister's and I took the chance to re-scape the tank. :) When I move into my new place I'm going to replace the sand with akadama and probably...

Right, I was just getting involved with a question about lighting when I realised that since I upgraded my tank I only actually have 60W over a 30USG tank... which may explain why some of my plants are quite leggy! So I'm looking to upgrade the lights at some point (probably in the next few...

The dot in the centre is a good sign. Moving the leaf on its own is still better than moving the eggs on their own! Brownie point on the ingenuity front for modifying a net. If you don't have an air stone then keep it near the flow (easier in a planted tank where we tend to over filter), it's...

Celestial Glade - 125Ltr Low Light, Low Maintenance

It's good that they're on a plant rather than on the tank wall, it means you can snip the leaf off and put the whole thing in the net so you don't damage the eggs trying to unstick them. If you can get a bit of rhizome with the leaf then even better as it will continue to grow in the net rather...

I know it differs depending on the size of led but I thought they were more efficient than that (up to 45% in the labs), it's often difficult to find up to date specs though as people are more interested in lumens/watt. TBH most of my experience with semiconductors is useless, a mixture of...

ok, that'll teach me not to re-read the backlog, just thought you were going for the <1w LEDs that most lightbulb replacements are made from! Have you got the spec sheet for these LEDs? I'm still a bit confused how they can dissipate so much power, it may be more the resistors he put inline...

You shouldn't need the fans for the LED's that's the main reason they use so much less power, they don't waste it as heat.

Re: Completely stumped - the saga continues I'm sure I've asked this before but are you using the rain water on any other planted tank? While you know the parameters of your rain water you don't necessarily know what the locals are pumping into the air on any given day!

As usual it's been a while! I've added in quite a few plants (thanks to my secret santa) and removed a couple too. I took 4 days away for Christmas at my parents, I shut off the lights and CO2 for my absence as I wasn't going to be there to dose the nutrients and I wasn't sure how long I was...

    Superman's Replant - 180l - Crypt's Causeway

I think once it grows in the divide will look quite natural, like in the savannah where you get small patches of trees and bush in the middle of the desert, or woodlands where you get small clearings. I'm liking this a lot now, the java fern does make a big difference.

    The upgrade!

Having just sent some of this plant to someone more knowledgeable than myself I have been told it's definitely not glosso! They too suggested that it might be Hemianthus micranthemoides, whatever it is it's growing well and bushing out beautifully :)

    Superman's Replant - 180l - Crypt's Causeway

I had similar problems with shrimp when I was dosing heavily, since I'm using an all in one solution I did wonder if it could be the copper in the traces rather than the nitrate... either way I dropped my dosing and kept on top of the water changes and the fatalities stopped.

hehe, I am resigned to the fact that I will always have a place for everything, whether everything is in its place though is another matter! The basic problem is I have too much stuff. I need to keep everything organised or it just ends up spilling out onto the floor. Know the feeling, it...

A small illustration of where I sit on the OCD scale... I decided to re-organise the cupboard under my tank yesterday... Though as I was discussing with my housemate, it's the process of organising that I enjoy rather than the result. So time will tell how long it will stay like that!

Surely that suggests that the traces aren't high enough in the TPN+ mix?! Liking the tank, it'll look even better when the mosses are attached to the stones and you can remove the threads. You were talking about greaseproof paper being to brown for the background, have you tried tracing...

Fairly certain that it is glosso, the tropica website says that it grows up if light is poor. I've got about 60W t8 over a 30G tanks so I'm guessing 2wpg is low enough to allow it to grow tall. This site seems to confirm my theory. (Though he calls it 'ugly vertical growth' :? I quite like...

Re: Completely stumpped Odd, it looks like what happened to a batch of my plants when I tried to de-snail them using an ammonia bath (which was obviously too strong). It can't be that though as you have fish alive and well in there. My next thought along those lines would be too low a pH but...

Yeay for Birthday's I now have pressurised CO2 via the FE method and 12 Copper Harlequin rasboras. :D The rummy noses are much happier now that they have someone to show them the big tank isn't so scary, they pop out to the front a lot more often and the rasboras have only been there 2 days :)...
  38. Egmel

    The upgrade!

The rummies are getting bolder, they are out in the foreground more often, they still have room to hide behind the glosso and the slates/wood but now they have a clearer escape route if they feel threatened. I think their timidness might be a mixture of the bright sand and no background but I...

Ok, so last night while doing the water change (at last, it's been almost 2 weeks  ) I decided to rip out the stems and move the glosso across. On a plus note, despite the lack of water changes, my water was still clear and there was little to no algae. :D Not all the slow growing...

Been following this for a while, thought I'd comment for once! I think it's more whether you like it. While I agree it's nice for others to appreciate what you've done, it's even more important that you like it since you have to live with it! Hmm, interesting tactic, might have to remember...

I'll be interested to see how you get on with those dwarf rasboras, they were the ones I always wanted but I'm limited in where I can buy fish. If I do ever see some though I think they would be an ideal shoal to complement my rummy noses :) I really like the sense of depth you've created in...

Thanks, I'm sure it'll change a lot before I'm truly happy with it. I can't wait for the swords and vallis to take over their respective roles, by then the stems will hopefully be bushier and healthier too. You may notice I'm back on the nutrafin ladder, my DIY kit refused to play ball so I...

Sorry for the delay on these, w*rk's been getting in the way. The vallis as predicted isn't making the bid for freedom that I'd like it to, though it has started to put out some new runners :) The crypts have stopped melting (I only lost a couple of leaves in the end) and are bedding in well...

I've heard mixed things, as I say I think they come into their own in a planted tank. Which is probably why people on this board rave about them but others are less enamoured! I'm loving them, they're fun to watch and they do seem to be nibbling on just about everything!

Well in return for tea and cake my friend played taxi and took me fish shopping :) Since the tank has had a low bio-load for the last month or so I decided to start slowly and i got 10 Rummy Nose tetras and 6 ottos. These guys are shoaling beautifully and even confuse my ottos into shoaling...

If I didn't have shrimp then I might consider getting some bigger fish to encourage smaller ones to shoal.
