This is what I am getting at, in the SW world the nutrients are taken up by the macro algae and the animals by making sure they have what they need to thrive in a controlled manner, so why can't that be done in FW?
I will come back to other accumulations later, one thing at a time :D
The expense of Triton depends on what you are comparing it to. It is basically the same as baling but with the added knowledge gained from accurate water testing, so you are dosing accurately and not guessing, like you do with most other methods, including EI for FW I guess. If you just do it...
Thanks for the reply Martin.
The plumbing on the sump is silent so noise is not an issue at all.
The first chamber I will try to reuse the Siporax for bio media and will also run fine filter socks.
Turn over speed I will look at, currently probably around 5-6x
I have an opportunity to change one of my tanks over from a marine macro algae seahorse tank to a freshwater planted.
I would obviously like to re-use as much of the equipment as possible to keep to changeover costs to a minimum.
The tank itself is a sumped 3ft optiwhite rimless...
I've been away from planted tanks for a good few years and I'm looking forward to see how things have progressed in the industry.
While I've been away I've been heavily involved in the Reef Keeping industry and I also run at home a high tech SPS reef. This reef is run on a method...
It's been a while since I've been on here........
I was browsing as you do and stumbled across this screensaver...... http://www.dreamaquarium.com/
It is by far the most realistic one I have ever seen.
Anyway as soon as I saw it I thought of you lot, so there you go.
PS... There is a...
If you can put up with the gurgling noise they are fine, when i had the overflow on my marine tank i used to spend hours fiddling with a bit of air line trying to stop the dreaded gurgle. If you can, get the tank drilled for a sump much better, if you cant then there is nothing wrong with these. :)
I'm a maybe if i'm not away with work, i'm afraid I won't know until alot closer to the date either.
Is it going to be at the shop all day or are you still planning on going to the blue planet etc still?
Depends what you want to build it out of, if you get one of those pre-fab concrete garages like the one i'm getting  as long as its over five metres away from your house you don't need planning permision because it's classed as a temporary building. Anything else I'm not sure.
I'm back off this trip on the 30th of this month and should be off for febuary.
I'm in Overpool by the way which is just off the M53 5 mins from the blue planet.
So who knows the best LFS's around so we could do a little tour, I know of Water world, Burleydam garden centre, and a couple of...
Don't get me wrong i'm more than happy to host the event, just have to speak to the missus and maybe send the kids off to their gandparents ;)
So far then me and maximum (obviously subject to date)
So, would we be any closer to having an event for the north west guys n gals?
On a boat in the north sea at the moment but i should be back in febuary, everyone still up for the blue planet?
I would love to host the event, i would'nt be able to put anyone up though i'm afraid :( full house...
If you look where the hoses attach to the taps and to the inflow and outflows, where the screw tightners screw down sometimes (on mine anyway) the hose comes away from the tapered bit, the solution i use is to cut an inch off the hose to make a better seal.
Know what i mean??
I am legend is ok, could have done more with it i think... cloverfield it has been said that it is a totally origional film.... no remake...... however there are loads of theories of what it is about ranging from godzilla to gears of war the movie!!!!
Browsing though tinterweb tonight and stumbled across this teaser trailer for an un-named film, all the movie bolgs are going crazy over it trying to work out what it is!!
Check it out here and see what you think...
Thanks for the relpy Dave,
This is the one i've bought via Fleabay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Brand-New-Drop-Checker-Set-with-pH-Test-Drop-Big-Sale_W0QQitemZ370001622315QQihZ024QQcategoryZ66794QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
Now that says that it comes with the regagent and all you need to do is add a...
Bought a drop checker which arrived this morning, put the reagent in with abit of tank water fitted and checked back an hour or so later and it was green so happy days!! :o
Now my question to you is (probably a stupid question) if the c02 was to drop off or increase for any reason would the...
5 mins for me!!!! :D :D
Oh eye just had a look on the website and it says you can get discounted rates if you have more than 15 people.
Just trying to think of any decent LFS's around, water world on the chester high road, any other suggestions??
The MV lamp height above the water as well as the depth of the tank works out about 30" above substrate.
So if i look to get about 15ppm C02 and just keep the fish well fed, swop the bag for the tropica plant nutrition and increase the amount of water changes we should be ok??
So, so far its
Mono Potassium Phosphate (KH2P04)
Potassium Nitrate (KN03)
CSM+B (can't find this)
So you think the amounts stated would be ok for heavy stocking (discus), also at the moment I just looking at keep lots of different types of mosses.
My sister in-law had one of these and it wasn't until she asked her dad to pass her her handbag that the alarm bells rang for her dad.
I think they tend to phone you when your gonna be busy like around dinner time etc....
so that you havn't got too much time to think about what your doing...
Right, just tried to read through Tom Barr report and just ended up bamboozling myself again!
Could someone give me an estimate of how much and of what I should dose for once a week dosing???
Also is it best to use powders for this type of dosing.
Where the bast place to get said powders...
Yeah 350 ltrs :D
Just started with the pressurised c02, so you say 15ppm should be ok?
At the moment I'm only looking to keep different variaties of moss.
Thanks for all the advice so far..... just been reading Tom Barr's EI write-up :? straight over my head at the moment but I shall keep...
I've read that the wpg guide does not really apply to larger tanks, also I have read that using MV lamps also changes things, so with that in mind i was wondering if any of you can give me a rough idea of what my wpg is.
The tank is 92.5 US gallons with Mercury vapour lamp.
Reading through the event post they seem to be a great time for people to get together and exchange ideas and bits and bobs, of course the drinky poos is allways nice.
I was wondering if there are any meets planned for the north west as there are quite a few members up here.
I would offer my...
I'm looking for what alternatives are out there for getting ferts etc in the water colum without having to do daily doseing, this is due to me working away and can't expect the wife to have to carry on the routein when I'm away.
At the moment i have one of those fert "put in and forget for...
I've just sourced a large C02 bottle (brewery type) as was wondering whether the thread type and size are generally standard between bottles and regulators.
One thing I have noticed is that none of the adverts for regulators list any sizes or thread patterns.
Just going to order my new bresslein HQI lamps from the Greman eBay, I've been using worldlingo online translator but with limited success, I've already agreed a price with the seller but he seems to have given me his bank details to pay him, which i'm not too keen on, just sent him another...
I can't remember the exact amount but for the 5 pieces plus 3 baffle pieces (tank was 24x18x12) i'm sure it was only about £40ish for float glass.
If you know your sizes just give one of them a ring, they should be able to give you a quote over the phone and give you choices of glass eg...
When I built my sump I went straight to the glaziers (not the yank in charge of man u) and gave them the measurements and got my glass within the hour. Make sure you ask for beveled edges, I got beveled for the outside edges but said not to bother beveling the edges for the baffles (Big...
Right just popped to the B&Q superstore to see what slate the had in, and found these stepping stones, the size and shape look top be ideal, what do you guys think??
Should be able to layer them nicley to create the "look"
At £3.92 seem a bit pricey so I'm gonna check the local builders...
Thanks mate, I'd love to do a tutourial, when it properly gets going......... the program I used for the scetches is sketchup6 which is a free download and really easy to use. http://www.sketchup.com/
Not the best looking drawing but they do give you an idea of space.
The next thing I want to...
Thanks alot for the replies guys keep em coming...
Right the first thing I'm trying to do is pick a section of the above picture to concentrate on, which is easyer said than done,
Trying to imagine a 3d space in 2d aint easy! However i think this bit includes everything from the picture...
Hello, the names Tim, been kepping fish for many years on and off, had a revival about 5 years ago and it's been constant since.
Kept everything from goldfish, malawis, tanganikans, marine reef, and freshwater stingrays (loved them). And my latest incarnation is Discus which are being prepared...
Right big plans afoot!
I looking to do a total rescape on my trigon 350.
My tank? (not actually mine)
Basically what I want is to build a plato (sp?) with the "water" being Riccia or the like, I got experience with making false backgrounds with polysterien and cement...
I was just wondering what would be involed in trying to farm Raccia on a smallish scale. The reason being I'm gonna need quite alot of it eventually when I rescape the tank.
I have a spare small tank (5gal), Loads of spare T8's and control gear...... etc
What I was planning on doing was to...
Yes the DIY yeast was really just a test to get me going, I've got three 2ltr generators (pop bottles) in line to the gas seperator/bubble counter, then on to two flower cup diffusers. I'm getting about one to two bps at the moment but will deffo be looking to upgrade to a bigger DIY system in...
Hi, yes I have thought about the coverage issue and have come to the conclusion that because of the shape of my tank (corner bow front) being like a 1/4 of a circle, that a centrally placed lamp with a adjust of height if needed "should"? give me enough light.
Unfortunatly cost is playing quite...
This is the light that i'm looking at http://www.aquaristic.net/shop.php/sid/ ... Bre%DFlein Also available on Ebay with lamp and delivery from germany for about 104 euros, £74 ish. It is a mercury vapour lamp and the design i think fits perfectly with my tank.
Hi there I thought i'd just pop in to indroduce myself. My name is Tim and I've been keeping fish on and off for about 13 years. At the moment I have a Trigon 350 discus tank which is getting slowly turned into a planted community for the discus, I've been reading through the site and there are...
