update after rescape
Thought it was about time I posted an update.
I found a gorgeous piece of wood in my lfs and had to do a minor re scape.
As usual any comments and suggestions would be welcome.
I would add that I have started to attach small Windelov plants, i.e. less than 1/2", to...
That particular piece came from Taunton Aquarium Centre. It just hit me in the eye when I walked in.
I've got another lovely piece from Leicester Aquatics which has been soaking since November and which I will be using tomorrow night when I re-scape my other tank - watch this...
I have a 6' x 2' x 2' heavily planted, low tech tank and in late November I fell in love
with a piece of bogwood 21" high and 18" in diameter which has been soaking
Sometime in the next couple of weeks I intend to add it to the tank and clothe it with
Anubias and Crypts...
Four months later and time for an update.
Still no water changes and the regime is the same except there were no macros added while I was away for two weeks.
The plants have decided which ones want to grow and the rest gave up although the vallis is still struggling on.
As can be seen...
Well I don't know what has happened to my posts for this thread but two seem to have gone walkies.
I don't have access to a microscope I am afraid.
Increasing the ripples helped break up the scum and then yesterday I added my usual ferts and followed up with a second dose today and the scum...
"As long as we know that we have more than enough of each nutrient then we needn't ever worry about actual values or actual ratio of values. I find the concept totally liberating. "
Isn't it just!!
I have altered the angle of my filter output to increase the surface ripples and it seems to be...
Yes coming from a reef tank environment that was my first reaction until the leaves on those plants I was trying to dwarf at the front of the tank, and one of those was only 1 1/2" tall, also turned pink.
Thanks for the replies.
Firstly I have to say that there are very few ripples on the surface and these are confined to one side only. Could this be the reason that the opposite end sees the greatest build up of scum? Anyway I will adjust the filter outflow accordingly.
Secondly water changes...
My 6' low tech planted tank has been set up for eight weeks now and in the last week it has started to develop a brown surface scum that keeps building up. Today I cleared it by floating newspaper but by this evening it was coming back again.
I am using a Tetratec Ex 1200 cannister filter and...
For me this sentence
"All I'm saying is don't just add chemicals without some kind of way of monitoring or regulating the levels as that could cause problems"
says it all and is what I used to advocate on my reef tanks
Thanks for the replies.
I am sorry I misled you over the filter. I did put some floss in the last chamber when I got the brown surface sludge and I cleaned it today as it was filthy.
I will keep the testing in mind of course.
Thanks Eds that's what I wanted to do with the image.
Sorry about not mentioning the substrate it is 6 bags of Fluorite and about 75 kilos of fine gravel and I must say I was amazed at the amount of root growth when I moved some of the Hygros from the front to the back yesterday.
I posted a picture and details of my tank on the original site hosted by Tom Barr but that seems to have got lost so I will start again. Also I cannot find the gallery anywhere so am using photobucket.

The 6' x 2' x 2' tank was set...
I tried that Graeme but wound up with loads of air bubbles and a line that was far from straight. I tried smoothing the tape as I went with a spatula with the same result and when I pricked the bubbles to get rid of the air the tape looked like a starry sky when the lights went on next day. What...
