Vaseline can damage the O-ring depending on what it's made of. These O-rings are designed to seal ungreased. IF you are going to grease o-rings in aquarium cannisters Silicone Grease is least likely to cause damage.

I've read repeatedly that silicone grease is preferred, and that vaseline has the potential to degrade the rubber seals. I can't comment on the validity of vaseline degradation, but I've stuck with silicone grease because of it, and it's been working great.

Same for me. Personally I don't see it making much if any difference to the seals. I rarely clean my canister filter but when I do, I also clean and lube the seals with silicone grease to hopefully prolong their life.

Yep, PVC solvent/cement if you want it to be permanent, silicone or a hardening pipe sealant (same stuff as for the threaded fittings) work too. I have even used silicone faucet grease for similar applications.

How about a new pump head? They're around £60 so still a lot cheaper than a new filter. Might also be worth trying some silicone grease on the magnet? It's worked wonders for me on some noisy powerheads and filters.
