    Dusko's Algae Guide

Hi Edvert, I think I have fixed the issue. For some reason one of the apps on the page hijacked my page. By changing the template the issue disappeared ... and that app disappeared too :cigar: will have to change template on all the pages though. Just to add; I am not having any tanks anymore...

Interesting fact about natural CO2 in Lowtech/Walstad

You see when I switched off my CO2 the DC turned back to blue! That is why I reacted with surprise when DC turned green after so many month

Interesting fact about natural CO2 in Lowtech/Walstad

I have 2cm deep potting soil layer which according to Diana will give lots of CO2 in such set-ups (less light because of the floating plants) Yes, this could be it since I have never changed it since started. I didn't even remove the 2 HOB filters nor the ceramic disc CO2 diffuser, as stated...

Interesting fact about natural CO2 in Lowtech/Walstad

Hi all, long time no see :D howyalldoin' ?! Thanks to some very stressful time in my professional life (which also effected my private life) I neglected all my planted aquariums for a long time now (approx 8 month). Beside feeding the fish and occasionally removing some overgrown plants...

    White spot?

Fish can handle it but I didn't do any water changes after the salt/heat treatment for at least a month if not longer. That salt amount is not much in comparison with salt water where you need 6 kg of salt for 180 litres  Glad you did it! Regards, Dusko

    White spot?

On Aqua Hobby it sais; This is how I dose salt even with plants like Cryptos, Crinum, Aponogeton, Anubias, Valls. Read this article; http://www.aquahobby.com/articles/e_ich2.php My Otos didn't suffer but I did create a very strong surface agitation and am using strong pumps (15 x turnover of...

    White spot?

What I did in the past and worked very well for me is next; 1 tea spoon of ordinary table salt (without iodine) per 40 litres (premixed in aquarium water before added to the tank), raised the temp to 30' Celsius, improved the surface agitation, dosed Easy Life FFM, re-dosed with NPK+traces and...

Green Water - Dusko's lazy solution to the problem

My drop checker is blue now. No additional CO2 and no algae still. Overgrown at the moment, I have to trim the plants soon.

Green Water - Dusko's lazy solution to the problem

Agreed :) This is a Hi-light Walstad method  Just to add; This tank has a 4cm layer of potting soil and is dosed 2 times a week with Tropica+ Note!!! During the GW I only disconnected the CO2 not the NPK/traces. I still dosed Tropica+ once a week.

Green Water - Dusko's lazy solution to the problem

I got a very bad algae bloom (Green Water) due to CO2 malfunctioning ( + 2 of my HOBs malfunctioning also). At first I wasn't sure what to do. I had very little free time and such Green Water case needed many water changes and adjustments. I decided to try something new :-) Instead of everyday...

    JBL CO2/PH computer

I work for a Zoo Shop in Sweden and encounter ignorance all the time :) (no hard feelings) I have had and still look after SW tanks and I can tell you one thing; The only thing I can find similar to the FW Plant tank is the lights and the circulation. But when it comes to other things like...

    Crystal Clear water

Just for the record, I use to have problems with water clarity in my 180 low tech. When I started using Easy Life FFM (fluid filter medium) my water became very clear. Easy Life FFM has a very good CEC and is able to bind ammo and other particles. Worth trying. I highly recommend this product...

    Green Film on Surface

The root problem is the insufficient Eheim pump which circulates 250 gph (approx 950 lph) :) Your tank is 250 litres and should circulate at least 1500 lph or more (I vote for more ;-) ) I had that problem in several tanks and each time I have had weak pumps and very little or none surface...

How to dose Easy Nitro and Easy Fosfo?

Thanks aaronnorth! So dosing 5ml of each Easy Nitro and Easy Fosfo once a week should suffice in Low-Light tanks. This gives us 10 ppm of NO3 and 0.5 ppm of PO4, so in a case I use Easy Carbo I could dose twice a week 5ml of each per 50 litres. Or in a case of Hi-light CO2 injected 3x a week...

How to dose Easy Nitro and Easy Fosfo?

vauxhallmark wrote; No chemistry guru answered so I'll try and bump this thread in hope one finds it and give us more insight into these new products  I mean 2ppm per week seems a bit too low. How much ppm of NO3 do we get if dosing half a tea spoon of KNO3?? (weekly dosage I use...

    JBL Algol

IME algae issues were always connected to insufficient water circulation (poor nutrient/O2/CO2 transport). As soon I upgrade to a stronger pump or simply toss in another spare pump to help the existing pump algae seem to stay at bay and plants start growing better. My tanks get good CO2 and/or...

How to dose Easy Nitro and Easy Fosfo?

Exactly  2ppm of NO3 or 0.1ppm of PO4 seems way too low IMO! It could be much better dosing 1ml per 50 litres every day to slowly increase the NO3 to about 20ppm and after that dose just once a week to keep the NO3 up. Fish food/waste will also add some PO4 and NO3 so 1ml per 50 lit a...

How to dose Easy Nitro and Easy Fosfo?

I just rang my friend that has the bottles of Nitro and Fosfo and it doesn't state nothing about the weekly dosage but our lable is in Swedish language. The English version has the weekly dosage as you stated. Bare with me here :-) So, it is 1ml per 50 litres of both Nitro and Fosfo once a week...

How to dose Easy Nitro and Easy Fosfo?

I am trying to find the way how to dose Easy Nitro and Easy Fosfo from Easy Life. They wrote on the bottles; Does this mean I have to dose 1ml per 50 litres of each daily like suggested for EC? Or can I apply the same as Tropica+NP suggests 5ml once a week. I will dose Fosfo and Nitro into...

    Why dont nutrients cause algae?

First of all she uses soils (good CEC) :) and floating plants (less light) and she often uses fast growing plants (Valls, Wisteria, Sprite, Egeria densa, etc) which can keep decent balance if nutrients aren't missing (low light = slow nutrient uptake) But let me quote D. Walstad :wink...

    Why dont nutrients cause algae?

I fully agree with this statement! Lets mention the non-planted folk which cycles their tanks using the Fishless Cycling method. This method suggests adding NH4 to the tank to start the cycle or formation of nitrifying bacteria (nitrosomonas and nitrospira). Some add inorganic NH4 others organic...

    Diana Walstead style tanks

Thanks to Diana Walstad we do understand the substrate (and its importance) much better now and I thank her for that book. AquaSoil Leeching

Dry Start Method is the best known method so far for starting a tank with nutrient rich substrates like ADA AS or potting soils, etc... Soils need to settle down before totally flooding the tank. Is a blackout necessary?

I experienced Spirogyra in my 11 galls medium-light. This aquarium is dosed with Easy Carbo 5-6 times a week and Tropica+NP 2-3x a week. Planted mostly with Cryptos. The only plant which got this algae was a few remaining stems of Rotala rotundifolia which didn't show deficiency symptoms. Easy...

    Diana Walstead style tanks

In my experience the most important thing is the preparation of the soil before flooding the tank. I advice you to use the Barr's Dry Start Method for cycling the soil.
