    Simples

A new setup to home a couple of rescued red cherry shrimp: 20 year old glass sweet jar, approximately 4 litres. Old piece of bogwood covered with Java moss (tied on with cotton). 3 W Ikea JANSJÖ LED lamp (2700 K), 6 hours per day. 30% water changes 3 times a week. That's it. If it goes...

Stable mature tank - Cardinal death, another swim bladder issue

Swallowing air is usually a temporary problem and I've never seen it cause death. Gas in the swimbladder is usually due to bacterial infection, but if it's just one fish, I definitely wouldn't recommend treatment as it's probably host-specific. Keep the water quality high - step up the water...

    BiOrb Air

Condensation on the glass depends of the temperature difference. If it's warmer outside than inside there won't be any.

    Stickleback Shallows

I've finally had to come to terms with the fact that the location of this tank (see earlier posts) means that it's just not going to be possible to grow much in the way of plants in this tank, so today I took the plunge and collected five juvenile three spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus...

Must check that out sometime. Leicester Aquatics on Welford Road isn't too bad. I went to clearwater Aquatics recently, first time for several years, and was quite disappointed.

Under tank heating or reverse under-gravel filtering?

I've been wondering about this too. Last time I had a planted tank (in "The Optimum Aquarium" era) substrate heating was regarded as a "must have". Now it seems to have gone away. I wonder how many of these claims are actually based on evidence of effectiveness? Certainly, when I eventually get...

    Stickleback Shallows

As I thought, life got very busy and I haven't been able to do anything with this tank for the past few weeks. However, I had a few hours yesterday, so I braved the heat and took the next step. This was to empty the tank completely and move it forward about an inch. That may not seem a big deal...

    Fluval internal filter question.

If it's too high out of the water you may find it sucks air and is noisy (this also wears the impeller over time). I've often used a couple of 90 degree elbows connected by short bits of tubing with internal filter of this sort to allow the outflow to break the surface (death to all surface scum!).

    LED on the cheap

That does look good. I'm a bit worried that just using one on a small tank will look a bit stark because it's basically a point source and will cast very deep shadows. At that price, I'll just have to experiment I suppose :-)

    Stickleback Shallows

I've been thinking about this project a lot over the last few days. I played around with a complex arrangement of mirrors to reflect more light into the tank and let me grow a wider range of plans before eventually abandoning the idea as too impractical. I have figured out how I can move the...

    Dutch Nature style

It's a matter of taste. I've always had black backgrounds in my tanks but I nearly always wind up with a crowded jungle-style planting - not too dissimilar to your nice tank. The white backgrounds do look good in the (to my view) sparsely planted Amano-style tanks.

    LED on the cheap

I'm thinking about experimenting with one of these over a 45 x 30 x 30 cm tank: 6000K and stated as 1000 lumen output. They come in a range of wattages from 10-50 watts. Has anyone tried one of these or have any opinions on how successful it's likely to be? Thanks,

The Great Cherry Red Shrimp Die Off

Breaking news! After a week of looking, I've just found two still alive, and seemingly healthy (feeding). That leaves one unaccounted for. Hmm, this changes things, I suspect the two casualties make have been weak individuals or in some way compromised.

The Great Cherry Red Shrimp Die Off

The Great Cherry Red Shrimp Die Off

Thanks. This is a very large enclosure and it's pretty stable, so my working theory is that the new shrimps were stressed in some way, either before I got them (local fish shop, not a specialist supplier), or by the move. Is three weeks plausible in that context though?

The Great Cherry Red Shrimp Die Off

I haven't done any testing, don't routinely, but as I say the Amano shrimp is fine - it's abut 3 years old now!

The Great Cherry Red Shrimp Die Off

No, no fish, just stuffed with plants - Anubias, Java fern and Java moss. I'm curious to know whether cherry shrimp are more or less hardy than Amano shrimp, because I can keep the latter alive with no problems.

The Great Cherry Red Shrimp Die Off

Three weeks ago I bought 5 cherry red shrimp. I brought them home and acclimatised them in the aquatic section of a large, mature paludarium. They seemed to do well at first, but over the last week they've disappeared and I've found two dead. This is a large, heavily planted enclosure, running...

Which soil for low tech tank?

When I ran my Walstad tanks I followed the recommendation in her book to use "loam". The closest I could get was a bag sterilised topsoil from Homebase. It was quite sandy but had a little bit of clay in, and it worked OK. I think if I was doing it again I would do the same thing but supplement...

    Stickleback Shallows

I plan on feeding grindalworms, whiteworms, small earthworms and Daphnia, but they normally adapt to frozen foods relatively easily too. The trick is to start by mixing them with live food they like, then gradually wean them.

    Stickleback Shallows

I'm currently in the planning stages of a new project I've called Stickleback Shallows. Tank This is going to be based on an old custom made 59 x 30 x 30 cm (o.d.) tank, just about 50 litres, that fits snugly on a shelf in an unheated but enclosed north-facing porch. There's no electricity...

So have you tried the setup with water in? Does it float? Even if it doesn't at the outset, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night because of visions that one day something would disturb it and it would come floating to the surface like the bloated corpse of a long-dead... (sorry got carried...

    Daphnia from the local pond.

I grow Daphnia in tubs in the garden, but I would be wary of using it directly from ponds containing fish. Each netful gets well washed under cold running water then tipped into an inch of water in a white margarine tub - the white background makes it easy to spot any undesirable macroscopic...

Hi everyone, I'm Mike Edwardes. My Grandma bought me my first goldfish over 50 years ago, and that started it all. Over the years I've bred many species of tropicals, dabbled in marines for a little while, and got blown away when The Optimum Aquarium appeared in the 1980s. I've never done a...
