    Hair Algae

I have now had my tank set up for about a month, how ever I am currently struggling with a slight outbreak of hair algae. Now i know that this tends to be associated with lack of flow/Co2 issues, how ever the vast majority of the algae im getting is on the moss, which is directly infront of the...

UP inline co2 reactor on a filter intake?

Well hopefully there won't be anything blowing up! Ha. But i don't think I can change the pressure! Will have a look at the reg tomorrow. Just bought myself the proper sized diffuser but I'm thinking I might end up with similar problems if its the pressure of the cylinder! Thanks for the help...

UP inline co2 reactor on a filter intake?

This time the flow reversed after about a minute! I gave it a shake but nothing seemed to happen. It's almost as if the diffuser is filling with co2 and causing the gas to go back out of the inlet. I'll try and get a video at some point, but not sure when I can do that.

UP inline co2 reactor on a filter intake?

It's saying about 5 bar at the moment, using an eheim 2217. And just bubbles come out of the intake, nothing from the outlet/spraybat. Thanks

UP inline co2 reactor on a filter intake?

Yeh I've tried it both ways around. It seems to work okay for about 10 minutes and then it's almost like the diffuser fills with co2 and it starts coming out of the intake!

UP inline co2 reactor on a filter intake?

Yeh I tried putting it on and all that happens is that the filter stops working and bubbles start coming out of the intake. Any idea what's causing this?

UP inline co2 reactor on a filter intake?

As the question says really! Is the above possible? I accidentally bought the wrong sized diffuser and now it only fits on the filter intake as opposed to the outtake. How ever when I connect it to said intake, of just causes water to come out of the intake! Is there any way around this? Thanks

    Keeping posted plants healthy

I recently ordered two batches of plants, how ever only the first batch has been delivered, it seems the second may have got lost. I can't really do anything in the tank until I get the rest of the order, as I'm also waiting on a co2 diffuser. What would be the best way to keep the current...

    Tom's 60cm Manzanita Scape

So having recently took order of a 60x40x40cm Optiwhite tank from the guys the The Green Machine I began thinking of what I was going to do with it and came across Tom Barr's manzanita wood, and having family based in the US meant it was pretty easy to get it shipped over. I got some amazing...

    Lighting for a 60cm Optiwhite

Having recently purchased a 60cmx40cmx40cm optiwhite, I am currently undecided on what to do about lighting for the tank. I have been looking at the 2x24w Arcadia system, but that would give me less than 2WPG across an already small tank. What do people think my best option is? All Pond...

    60x40x40: lighting?

Did you go for the 2x24w? I have a tank of the exact same dimensions and am current trying to decide what lighting to go for! Cheers Tom

    Maturing filter media

Thanks for all the replies, in particular Ceg's one! My problem is that I am currently at home, and the tank is due to be set up while im at university (mid-september), so that means that anything I prepare at home will have to be transported (a couple of hours journey). So I take it that if I...

    Maturing filter media

Okay thanks, I take it I could just do this in say a bucket of water? Would rather not go through the cycling process with my full tank set up!
  14. L

    Maturing filter media

As i'm about to set up a new tank, I don't have any access to already matured filter media. Is there anyway to begin the process before i get the tank set up? I'm also going to be using aquasoil in the tank, so ensuring I already have mature media is quite important. Thanks

Weight of a large tank upstairs?

I am looking into getting a large tank, around 300l (250-300kg) but am unsure on whether the floor upstairs will take the weight. It is quite a large tank, 2 1/2ft wide, so the weight will be spread quite well. Just wondering if anyone has any structural knowledge about what kind of load the...

    Shrimp King ?

I also just purchased 5 CRS from this site and it was brilliant! Great shrimp and very well packaged, survived an extra night at the local post office depot no problem! Would definitely buy again! Tom

    Shrimp King?

Sounds like a decent seller then! Will certainly be using him in future.

Just wondering if any has bought anything from this site? Seem to have some pretty good stuff at decent prices. http://www.shrimpking.co.uk/ Cheers Tom

    Tom's 30cm Cube v.2

Yeh I agree on the rocks, didn't want them too tall though, im only planning crypt parvula in the foreground, so hopefully the rocks should stay clear. Just got the wood yesterday, heres how it looks in the tank. What does everyone think? Cheers Tom

    Tom's 30cm Cube v.2

Thanks Neil. The space at the back is for the sumatra wood, which should be here in the next day or two! That will add plenty of height, im just hoping that I can tie it all together. Tom

    Tom's 30cm Cube v.2

Some of you may remember my 30cm cube from the start of the year, which, unfortunately after a very busy summer fell into a state of disrepair. So, inspired by a number of tanks on here, I decided to completely re-scape it. To go with the new scape, i also bought a Hydor external heater and a...

    Tom's 30cm Cube

Well this scape is pretty much finished now, just waiting for the hairgrass to totally grow in. The HC is growing very dense, so looks like i shall have to rip it up sometime and start again! Heres a picture taken today:

    Tom's 30cm Cube

The tank is still going well, removed the old filter in place of the new one. Growth is looking a bit white on the p.helferi, so ive upped my tropica PN dosing. Sorry about my rather poor attempt at taking/editing photos, really cant get the hang of it! Cheers Tom

    Tom's 30cm Cube

Yeh its been very easy, no problems what so ever. The changes in colour are really noticable in differing lights, while I had just the one light running it stayed green, but within a day of putting the second light back on its already turning I nice orange colour (as you can see!) Tom

    Tom's 30cm Cube

Thanks Mark, the plant is something I found at the Green Machine; 'Proserpinaca palustris' I believe. Turns a nice shade of orangey/red under strong light, hopefully i'll be able to get near that with the second light going! Can't wait to see your new tank btw! Tom

    Sedona - 20L (Liza's Tank - Update)

Re: Liza's 20L Nano Tank Its looking really nice! Good choice with the Acicularis, I think it has defiantely added something to the scape. Can't wait to see it when the foreground fills in! Tom

    Tom's 30cm Cube

Yeh my last tank had a lot of hairgrass in it and it looked really good, guess this just needs some time to grow in!

    Tom's 30cm Cube

I must apologise for the lack of activity in this thread, the tank has recently become totally over run with algae! So a couple of days ago i started adding excel (2x overdosed) and added another filter. (current flow rate is about 24x!) I will remove the old one after the new one has matured...

Going away for a week - Help needed!

I am going away tomorow for a week, but im not sure on how to run my tank while im gone. Somehwere will be there to feed the fish, but has very limited knowledge about the dosing. So should i just not dose for a week or ask him to just dose TPN? Or any other ideas? (currently running CO2, full...

Algae starting to form, ID needed

Okay will get on the lighting tomorow. At current I have just had the CO2 coming on at the same time as the lights, but will set that to come on an hour earlier. This is the guide I used to make my EI solutions: Potassium Nitrate - 40g to 500ml of water and adding 10ml per 100L of water would...

Algae starting to form, ID needed

Thanks for that James, but after following your guides im still having troubles with it. Im doing 3 water changes a week, increased CO2 and Ferts but still it grows. Im also finding it very hard to remove! I know it says excel, but this stuff is everywhere, so it would need a v.high dose. Any...

    Tom's 30cm Cube

Well your coments about the moss Howard confirmed something I had been thinking about for a while, so during a water change yesterday I decided to get rid of it, it was detracting from the scape and was a major algae magnet! Not sure what to do in its place, may get rid of the rocks and put...

    Tom's 30cm Cube

Re: Tom's 30cm Cube - Update 22/9/08 Thanks Howardish :) Ive had my first algae attack this week, not too sure what im doing wrong, CO2 is high so is my dosing. Stats are all normal aswell :S. So within a few days the uppers of all the plants got taken over by algae, so today I took the...

    HC issues

I made them from the guides on this forum, water/chemical solutions. Can't remember exact numbers but it was something I had read a couple of times. There is no algae present, there is quite a few leaves that are a yellow colour but there is also the withering of the tips as you see in the...

    HC issues

Yeh the TPN is just from the last tank, so just finishing it off. And in all honesty, I probably dose moe like 2ml anyway, I do it very roughly. CO2 is diffused through a ceramic diffuser. Got an Eden 501 filter, circulation arounnd the tank seems pretty good, CO2 bubbles are constantly flowing...

    HC issues

Although my hemianthus callitrichoides is growing well and still looking pretty healthy, some of the leaves are starting to look a bit unhealthy! Im dosing E.I. and i've also upped my CO2 (drop checker already showing 30ppm). Anyone else have any ideas as to what it might be? Thanks Tom

    Tom's 30cm Cube

Cheers guys! Im going to give the tank a couple of weeks to let it grow through, then decide on a background. Tom

    Tom's 30cm Cube

Thanks for that Garuf, i'll have to give it a try! Just started E.I. dosing this week, the glosso is still doing well and the Pogostemon helferi is starting to grow, I think it was just shedding the old leaves as it is looking much healtheir now and all the dead leaves had dropped off. The...

    Tom's 30cm Cube

Ceg4048: Yeh I tried to positiuon the moss so that it transfers onto the wood, so hopefully it will give it a nice covering! I cranked the CO2 up today, so we will see if that has any effect on the tissue loss. The reason i suspected that it might just be shedding old leaves is because there are...

    Tom's 30cm Cube

Thanks for all the comments guys! Yeh i'm really chuffed with the wood, got it from the Green Machine, a couple of pieces Mark had apparantly been 'saving' only cost about a tenner for the two pieces aswell! 2 weeks in and the tank is developing nicely, the Ludwigia arcuata (right corner) and...

    Tom's 30cm Cube

I have been the owner of a 45 gallon tank for som time now, but recently have really struggled to keep it under control just because of a major lack of time. So I decided to go for something a little smaller, a 30cm float glas cube. I made a trip down to the Green Machine( amazing place, amazing...
