I am no aquascaper but i finally managed to scape something I am happy to view so Im gonna keep it. 🙂 .. in my mind i wanted the main stone to showcase a rhino horn..
I want to add more scatter gravel which I have similar to ones i just tried out for the pic in the front but it looks rubbish...
Thanks @Myrtle. That's good. I suppose a peninsula style scape would work too. I was just very intrigued when I started looking for inspiration online that they were mostly left side heavy.
Yes i felt it was more of a choice thing. I am left handed but somehow felt a right dominated scape was always a bit off 🙂. Well, i just moved to a new house and the tank will be viewed from the left side and front so contimplating a right hand side heavy scape but can't get myself to do it 😁
That's really interesting! Thank you for sharing!
I always assumed its how most people read from left to right(90% countries) but this was such a good read. Thank you @alnitak ! 🙂
I suppose it's a matter of choice but is there a reason that most scapes are more heavier focused on the left hand side?
Even many of the two island scapes have larger rocks placed on the left hand side of the aquarium.
Perhaps I have been only looking at those online so thought I'd best check...
Thanks Courtneybst! I will do a bit of reading on Millenium wood. I think one of the sponsors here on UKAPS also sells millenium wood so may be able to guide.
Will post what I learn as it may help someone else.
Sorry for my ignorance. I was sold this wood as Redmoor root but someone said its dragonwood which is not suitable for aquatic life.
Is this dragonwood?
I briefly worked for a car insurance broker and this is so true. The brokers are salespeople that just want to get their commission by selling. But the companies never pay out in event of an accident!
On another note when I looked at the pic I just thought if it was my landlord he wouldve said...
I agree Zozo. The landlord has finally said that they arent blaming the tank but looking for all options to be considered. I think this is fair tbh as its their property.
They will get a new door fixed with trickly vents which will defo help. I am happy if the lid solution keeps them happy and I...
Thanks Tam. I have been looking at perspex sheets for lids. There's a shop on ebay that cuts, shapes and polishes them so be worth having a chat with them.
Thanks Hufsa. I saw these online. I can only try. According to me no lid can be air tight for an aquarium with livestock so this may be the best option.
Okay so the landlord has after much deliberation agreed to my first suggestion of getting a lid if I want to keep the aquarium. Really happy with this as atleast I dont have to leave the hobby!
Now the only requirement is that it has to be a tight lid. Any suggestions on this?
I googled perspex...
Thank you all for your replies. The tank will go into storage till we move house. I have to honour the landlords request not just out of necessity but of principle.
Aquarium - 0 Landlord - 1
😀
Congrats on the property! I could only imagine how you must feel. A good home and a good tank 🙂
I kinda knew that it was over when the landlord spoke to me but just thought I'd check if anyone else was in a similar situation. (Misery likes company 😔).
Yes Nick. Seems so! Contract says no pets but nothing specific about aquariums. I suppose its classified as a pet 🤔. Its fair though as if he feels its damaging to his property then I understand. Theres never been an issue with it the last 5 years but a silly handyman said that the tank is a...
Apologies if this is the wrong section to post this query. Please delete if not allowed. I needed some advice.
I live in a rented property and we faced a bit of mould due to an incorrectly fixed door(draft coming through the gaps).
My landlord is adamant that it is due to the rimless aquarium...
Hello UKAPS people,
I want to try out a glued rock aquascape. But the rocks are slim and tall around 40cm so it's a bit of a task. What base (flat surface) can I use to glue the rocks to ensure they are secure that can be done outside the aquarium then placed inside securedly?
During the lockdown I wanted to buy some hardscape and came across their website. Their service was top notch in comparison to other aquascaping shops I contacted. I contacted James on FB and he sent pics of the rocks I was looking for which allowed me to choose the rocks I needed(kept them...
This may fit within the off-topic section (please move or delete if needed) but I just wanted to know how people store rocks that arent being used in the current scapes for future use.
Sorry for the noob question. I am in the process of rescaping my tank. It was only set up for 4 months with tropica soil and soil powder but the water is extremely dusty even though Ive rinsed it several times.
Do I need to just replace all of it or do a few more rinses as it doesnt seem to...
I am planning to use silicone to glue the bottom of some heavy rocks to slate as they will be placed at an angle for a scape and I need to secure them.
Just wanted to know if there is a way to remove silicone from rocks if I change my scape in the future and need to use the same rock in another...
Phew. I think i just needed some reassurance on it🙂.
Re the scape: i took a lot of help from experts on this forum when scaping as I am not the most artistic person. Happy with the way it turned out in the end.
Okay so I just set my aquarium. I have never used external filters before so this is my first time.
My anxiety levels are through the roof as I keep wondering what would happen if one of the suction cups that hold the outflow pipe in place comes loose and the outlflow goes out of the aquarium. 😬...
So the Twinstar and s2pro dimmer arrived today. Just set it up. To me (in person) the scape looks a lot better than with just my room spotlights which I think is the idea of getting the LED (other than for growing plants)🙂. I like the look of it better now. I wish I had larger rocks for 'moar...
Thanks mate. I wanted to do it this scape with help from the pros on here rather than just doing it on my own. I too like the way its evolving with feedback.
I plan to use monte carlo as a carpet with DHG near the rocks.
Rearranged the RH large stone and added a few changes. Is this better? I may add a few tiny stones towards the front of the tank as the line seems too linear and unnatural.
Sure.. will try that tomorrow morning. I changed some of rocks on the right side as I felt the left and right didnt match each other as the right side had more vertical rocks compared to the left side. Will give it a go tom.
Thanx Brooky77. I was going for a rock only scape.
Here's what I came up with. Any suggestions? I still have another 40kgs of rock left but was thinking of keeping clean with a montecarlo carpet and a bit of DHG. However I reckon I need to marry the 2 sides.
Thanx Paraguay, i have a lot more rocks. Just put in the largest 2 for now 😀. Was looking to get some suggestions to lay out the rest as a step-by-step process.
I got impatient so laid out the rest too. Ill add another pic tom morning. Wanted to sleep over it and see how it looks again.
Hi ukaps,
I am in the process of completing a new scape on my 80x40x45 aquarium and wanted some suggestions/help! Thought rather than me doin this on my own I'd like to take some suggestions from the pros here!
It's meant to be a mountainscape. Any suggestions are welcome. Please be polite is...
Really sorry if this is a repeat question or if it is a very basic question.
Is it okay to put a yoga/exercise foam mat inside the aquarium under rocks to protect the bottom glass?
Will the foam mat leech anything into the water column?
Thanks Zozo. It was a cheap yoga mat so thought id need to double layer it incase it completely colapses with the tank filled.
My DIY (Arts n Crafts) skills are really poor so couldnt even get the size right:oops:.
Hi guys,
My aquarium has a bit of overhang from both sides on the foam pad. Is that okay or will it cause issue for me when filled? I cut the foam pad a lil too small. I'd try new foam pads but the tank is too heavy for me to lift so wouldnt do it unless its unsafe.
Its a rimless 80cm. Here...
Thanks Hogan!
A retailer said its better to use the Tropica aquarium soil as a bottom layer and top it off with the Tropica aquarium soil powder so got really confused.
Should I just go for the powder version or is it better to go with what he suggested as it will all mix if I rescape anyway?
Really sorry, I have a very basic question.
If I use the Tropica aquarium soil Powder(Link Below) in my aquarium do I need to cap it or top it with some other gravel, substrate on top or am I okay to use it without anything else...
:) sorry guys.
I was looking at used units. Didnt wanna post ebay links on here incase its against the rules so pasted the manufaturer ones:
https://fluvalaquatics.com/uk/product/aquasky-bluetooth-led-2-0-12-w-38-61cm/
https://fluvalaquatics.com/ca/plant/
The 3.0 is the too expensive for me...
Thanks Chrisfraser05. The Fluval Aquasky is above my budget but I could buy the Fluval Aquasky 2.0.
Do you know what is the difference between the two?
There are numerous questions on here asking for lighting suggestions so please delete if repeated question.
I am looking for an LED light for an 80cm aquarium with a dimming option. Something to grow montecarlo and Blyxa Japonica.
I am limited with options as I have a low budget (80.00 to 90.00...
Hello
Need some electrical help. I currently use the Aquatlantis easy LED. I need to attach a dimmer to it. Can anyone one confirm if it is safe to use a universal dimmer on it or do I need to buy Aquatlantis dimmer?
Please give me feedback on my latest scape. Plan to add a monte carlo carpet.
PS. Please excuse the messy tank. I wanted to try my hand out before doing a complete clean.
I recently moved house so needed to do a rescape.
I am looking for a low maintenance setup(no plants). Any suggestions for some really tiny fish that can support the scale of the scape?
It's only a 54Litre tank and have some amanos in a holding tank that will go in too.
Emilio: IMHO you need one to know how much of Co2 is in the water column.
Read the tuts on the Co2 section. It will help you understand more about Co2, DCs etc.
Ive learnt sooo much from the amazin ppl on UKAPS which has helped me in the hobby! (I am still learning :D).
Hi Emilio, I am not sure about that.. TBH i feel it's just maintaining the balance like Daveslaney said above.. your light may be too high for the Co2 going in... what colour is your drop checker??
I had the same problem with MC..I reckon you need to up your CO2 injection-- BPS may not be the best indicator of how much Co2 you are putting in, what does your DC say?
Also check your flow/distribution across the lower level of the tank. best case scenario-- reduce your lighting and begin...
After much trepidationo_O I am finally done connecting the regulator to the FE. phew! I guess the first time is always the hardest. I still have my arms so yes it went well! :)
Thanks Roy. i feel more comfortable with the valve closed then leave it open as I have never used an FE before but got really confused when it said that the valve needs to be open to save the regulator.
thanks Kadoxu. that was something i was afraid of! gas spreading all over the place.. can't do it outside the house as my solenoid needs to be connected to be switched on..
Will try it this evening---if you guys don't hear from me again-- things dint go as planned
Hey guys,
Just needed to know if you keep your solenoid switched on and needle valve open when you connect the regulator to the fire extinguisher?
I just got an FE and needed to connect but read somewhere that the gas comes out with 300psi that it could damage the regulator if it isnt open...
Hello UKAPS people,
I just wanted to know what do you do with your empty Co2 fire extinguishers?
I don't have any company that will refill them where I live and I am sure it doesn't go with household thrash.
How do I get rid of the empty canisters?
Hi Soilwork,
Have a look at these : http://www.evolutionaqua.com/aquariums/the-aquascaper.html
You may not get a light with it but well worth a look. It from our very own UKAPS founder George Farmer!
The co2 outlet is to the side of the FE connected to the horn. Your regularlor will be horizontal as opposed to the sodastream cylinder which has the outlet at the top of the cylinder.
Thanks Martin.. the only issue I have is the regulator goes vertical on the soda stream but will need to be horizontal on the fire extinguisher which will render my bubble counter useless.. is there a way to removing the bubble counter and connecting the tube directly to the regulator??
Hi UKAPS people,
As the title says: I want to move from the soda stream system to an FE system as it's getting too expensive for me at the mo.
Do you know what parts/paraphernalia I would need as compared to the one I currently have.
I currently have:
1. Sodastream adaptor(I surely wont need...
Hi Dan,
As far as i know- they need to offer you with a named driver discount on the policy. The policy is in the name of the company but you are the named driver.
named driver discount isnt NCD i.e. you dont get a NCD letter. But you still get the same financial discount every year just as you...
Hello UKAPS people,
Didn't know where to post this-- I am looking to learn more about keeping and maintaining a marine(saltwater) aquarium.
Do you have any links regarding the set up and maintenance advice etc?
Aqua360: I feel your pain:lol:. I was also going to ask the same question last week.. I have a shoe rack from homebase thats chipboard and my Mrs isnt happy with another piece of furniture. I got MTS so I want to put a second tank on the shoerack:rolleyes:. I know there was a post on how someone...
A couple of years ago I rented a flat in a Grade 2 listed building. The agency was really particular about the NO PETS rule.
I nonetheless kept a 24L tank :). Every time the agency came over I covered it with a black cloth and a few laundry clothes so it was well hidden:rolleyes:. Never got...
So i finally put the snails in.
My amano seems to be possessive about his rock.. has refused to move his spot and seems like he/she is not happy with the snails on it
Hullo UKAP folks,
I have ordered some nerite snails online. I wanted to know how do I introduce them into the tank?
Do I just drop them in or do I need to acclimatise them like fish?
Many thanks
Thanx herezor. I have been also adding liquid carbon to help but doesnt seems to change. The plant seems to be spreading but most of the leaves that sprout up are the same as the pic.
Guys, following on my other post on raising my CO2 levels. I have attached 2 pics of the plants. Can you help me identify what deficiency the plant has by the pic?
I have it set to come on 70 minutes before the lights n switch off an hour after. Not sure why the co2 concentration isnt improving. o_O
Its about 3bps now n i am manually checking the co2 levels with the solution in a test tube every hour. Still shows insufficient co2! My Hairgrass is slowly...
