    actinic lighting vs algae growth

Clive, I have read what you have said on this subject and have sent PMs back and forth with you in the past. So I am aware of what you are saying and agree with you. But the rest of the world isn't ready for this. I'll explain. I just want to tell everyone about my recent experience trying to...

    CSM+B Question

James, I don't know for sure that the deficiency is Iron. But I thought that Niotrogen and Magnesium effected 'old' leaves. This is strictly 'new' growth. So I am guessing Iron. I think that I might just go overboard and get CSM+B and Iron Chelated 10%. I don't want to dose Flourish everyday...

    CSM+B Question

Had a quick question about your experiences with CSM+B. I am dosing Seachem Flourish for traces and Iron. I am getting some new growth on my Repens which is yellowing. I think this is Iron deficiency. I would like to try CSM+B but don't have any experience with it. I have read that it still...

Using (2) equal wattage bulbs increase overall wattage?

Hi everyone, I read this elsewhere on the net: Example: Take a 10 gallon tank, by the math you could put 2 - 18 watt Normal Output Flourescent bulbs over it and have 3 + WPG "mathematically" but you still only have 18 watts of "intensity. You will not be able to grow many varieties of plants...

    EI Dosing Calculation Confusion

Thank you for the reply Clive. After posting yesterday I decided to look a bit deeper into this whole El dosing thing. After reading the original Tom Barr analysis page , I came to the conclusion that what I needed to do was start keeping track of my parameters, CO2, lighting, dosing, etc. Do...

    EI Dosing Calculation Confusion

So what exactly is considered higher levels? Article says to shoot for 2ppm.What range are we talking about? 3,4,5ppm? Don't have an issue with GSA currently (knock on wood). Would raising my PO4 increase plant growth? . So obviously 3ppm isn't the way to go. Interesting.

No bubbles when solenoid cuts on

Ok thanks. I have only seen/heard them being called a check valve.

No bubbles when solenoid cuts on

When you say 'return valve', are you talking about the check valve you put on the silicone tubing or something else entirely? Sorry for the dumb question.

No bubbles when solenoid cuts on

Only have canned air. Will try that. Yes, this is what I meant by 'fully open'. Guess this is wrong terminology. Fully backed off is what I meant. Was a bit frustrated at time of asking for assistance.

No bubbles when solenoid cuts on

Hi all, I just received a used Milwaukee ma957 w/solenoid. Followed the instructions I found online and set it up. I am having trouble with no bubbles coming out when the solenoid cuts on in the morning. If I adjust it so that I get bubbles, then they won't stop coming out when solenoid cuts...

    EI Dosing Calculation Confusion

Wanted to let you guys know that I got a PM response from JamesC about my questions. And here it is. So there you have it. As was one of my thoughts, it isn't an exact science, but an 'Estimative Index'. :text-imnewhere:

    EI Dosing Calculation Confusion

Thank you for your response. Yes I have read the article. It is very informative. It would seem that this would raise the level of KH2PO4 even more than the .42g I had mentioned. This would take the total level of Phosphate to well over double the highest level suggested on James'...

    EI Dosing Calculation Confusion

Hi all, Wanted to run some things by you as I am a bit confused. I just ordered my dry salts and am going to give EI a go. :D Looking on James' page it states you should dose to achieve the following: Nitrate 20–30ppm, Phosphate 1-3ppm, Potassium 20-30ppm. But then on the Dosing Calculator...

    Glass canopy or not?

Thanks for the replies. My tank did have a brace in the middle, but I cut it off because I didn't like the shadow the light made in the tank. I think I like it better without a canopy personally. As long as the only affect is evaporation, I am fine with it.

    Glass canopy or not?

So what do you guys think? Is a glass canopy necessary on a tank? If not worried about any inhabitants jumping out, do you really need one? Advantages/Disadvantages. Any thoughts/comments welcome. The reason for posting is I want to reposition my diffuser closer to the front, but canopy in the...

    Problem raising GH

Do you know off hand if the Amazon Sword if particularly sensitive to Equilibrium? I am noticing some 'white-washing' of the leaves. Not sure if this is because of the Equilibrium or from the product Rid-Ich+ I used to treat Ich from some YoYo Loaches I acquired. I know that I shouldn't have...

    Problem raising GH

No I haven't added it to RO or DI H2O. I am not confused about the KH going up. I am using Alkaline and Acid Buffer together to help maintain pH levels and the increase in KH is expected. I just can't figure out why the Gh will not rise at all.I contacted my local water supply and they reported...

    Problem raising GH

Apparently I am under the wrong impression. In most things that I have read the consensus is that the majority of plants prefer a range of 3-6 degrees GH. I am not an expert and this info may be out-of-date. IDK. I understand that there are signs that will let you know there is something wrong...

    Problem raising GH

No it is definitely not Alkaline Buffer. I have it, and Acid Buffer, and they look nothing like Equilibrium. Good thought though. If you don't use a test kit to monitor your levels. Then how would you know where you stood? How would you know that you needed to add a product like Equilibrium? Or...

    Problem raising GH

Can only go by what the bottles say. They clearly say GH/KH right on them. And the instructions say that the KH will turn the test water blue after the first drop and then keep adding one drop at a time until it turns to its yellow endpoint, and that is what happens with the bottle labeled KH...

    Actinic lighting.

Hello all, have a lighting question for you. I have a 40 gallon newly planted tank with CO2. The light that I am using is a Current Dual Satellite w/ two 65w bulbs. One is a 6,700k/10,000k and the other is a 420nm/460nm Actinic. Do you know if the spectrum from the Actinic is good for freshwater...
