We've used a few of these for clients at work and they work pretty well to be fair. The only issue we've seen is the sponge on the prefilter being to fine. It was getting clogged a bit too soon and needs cleaning every few weeks. Apart from that, easy to dismantle and clean and the flow seems...
Can anyone recommend a good journal that uses a sump in the planted tank please? A friend is setting up a large planted tank and want to use their sump. It would need to be low light, non co2 I presume due to the lower flow rate and was hoping someone had done a journal similar.
Thanks
Hi all, I've got hold of an Stc-1000 thermostat controller for wiring to my Hydor heater. I've had a couple of Hydors and love them, never had one stick on and boil fishes but I like the security of having an Stc-1000 controlling the heater in what will be a new tank set up for me soon. I'm...
Hi all, im about to set up my new tank in a few weeks and I want to change my current Jbl Manado substrate with some Unipac Fiji but I can't afford to do the whole lot. I was thinking of using some of my manado which grows plants well and then capping it with some Fiji. Has anyone done anything...
Yes, I had seen these I seem to remember but I thought that to connect a diy acrylic spray bar I'd have to have a 16/12 spray bar so I could join the two together with a piece of 1" 16/22 tube. I wasn't sure if going down in size from pipe to spray bar would reduce overall filter flow. Or am I...
Thanks chaps. I've struggled to find a piece of acrylic pipe long enough. I guess I could join two with a small piece of filter hose. The filter pipe work is 17/22mm pipe. I'll have to have a go at my maths!!
The other issue I have is the filter pipes have to come up the rear of the tank rather...
Hi all, I'm getting things together for my new tank which will be set up in a couple of weeks when I move. It's 120x45x45 and I wanted to use a spray bar along the back. Can I use a spray bar 120cm long? I'm going to be using an Eheim 2075 which comes with the install kits for inflow and...
You shouldn't need any other bracing as the strip across the front provides all the structural integrity and stops it from collapsing. You should have a quick read of this thread
http://www.ukaps.org/forum/threads/diy-ada-style-aquarium-stand.31348/
I'm using info from the same thread to...
Stand looks good mate but I'd add a cross brace across the bottom at the back. I'd also add another upright at the back to help support it all. Sounds like an expensive outlay so far so that stand wants to be as strong as possible. Good luck with it all.
Welcome mate. Good luck with your scape, plenty of inspiration on here. There's a few that have done discus and planted tanks as well. Have a good read before starting. I myself have used play sand and although it did its job in a dirted tank I'm not that keen on the look of it. Looking forward...
Yeah I saw those. I'll definitely be using some. I've read the whole thread about 3 times now! Anyway I'll be doing the same design with 18mm Mdf but I'm going to double up on the sides and centre support just to help with the longer span.
I'd like to do that Ed but it's too short for the tank. I'd need to have another tank but a lot shallower... ... I wonder if my wife would like me to take her out to dinner for no apparent reason! ;)
Thanks chaps, it's going in the 120x45x45 tank that's it sat on....as soon as I silicone it together! When it's up the other way it's reminiscent of the one Alistair had a few months back in his journal but the only problem is the big thick cut off trunk bits are short so I'd have to grow...
I think the problem would be attaching the doors with kitchen hinges to the wooden frame so that the edges of the doors are still flush with the sides of the stand. I guess I could do the design in this thread and up the thickness to 25mm.
I have to make a 120cm wide stand and thought I'd have to go the wooden frame route. I really like the ADA style stands though but I'm unsure wether this design would be strong enough for 120x45x45 tank. What does everyone think?
Could I have opinions please as to wether I should trim off all the really thin roots to leave the other thicker roots more visible?
Thanks

I think it's growing away nicely Henrik. I like the look of it but I do think the wood is a bit small and may get lost in a few months. Will be following.
No mate, never been brave enough to do a journal yet. Moving in a few months so may do one when setting up my 120 rimless optiwhite. I'm not sure how to post pictures here other wise I'd put some of my aquanano on. I got my Aqua nano second hand on eBay for a tenner. Upgraded the light to a tmc...
It seems pretty cheap so I'll give some a go. I want to do the best job possible really with the tank.
Now all I've got to do is get the glass all apart.
Thanks
Thanks Big Clown, you obviously catch bigger fish than me! I'll see if I can source some.
Thanks Ollie, is the silicone remover needed. I've never had any trouble removing bits of silicone before. I thought about stainless steel wire but I was worried about it scratching the ends of the glass...
I bought a tank with a known leak in the seam. To be on the safe side I want to take it all apart and re-seal it all. It's 10mm optiwhite glass. What I'd like to know is how to de-seal it to start with please? I thought I'd use some fishing wire to break the silicone seal but it just keeps...
Hi Big Tom, love this scape. Can I ask where you position the plants growing above the surface? Do you remove all compost from them? Do you have all the roots in the water or just part of them? I'd like to try some plants in a similar way and would appreciate any advice please?
I've never been that keen on rock scapes but you've won me over with this one. Awesome mate. Congrats. Like everyone else I can't wait to see it planted.
Did my normal weekly 40% w/c on my 25L shrimp tank today. Dosed with 2.5ml of tmc nutrafeed during also. Within a couple of hours I had quite a bit of a white sort of cobweb algae in the tank. Tank is about 3 months old and I've not had any algae problems so far. Nothing has changed in my...
That's fantastic. Huge credit to you Big Tom, if you didn't know the video was of an aquarium you just wouldn't guess. So natural looking and a real inspiration.
Yeah, that would have been a good idea. However....I've already cut it so the length is shorter now. Maybe I can find some smaller pieces to silicone and attach the length to the ends.
Cheers Kirk, that worked a treat. Now I need to know if there are any technical rules regarding the bracing. I've had to remove one of the lengths so I could reduce it to get filter intakes and outflows in. When I put the length back it won't join up with the end braces in the corners and I need...
i need to remove one side of the brace around my 4ft tank. I've cut it ok with a stanley blade along the thin edge which is glued to the tank but where it is glued to the other parts of the brace on the flat side I can't get a blade in to cut it. Has anyone else had to do this or can anyone...
It probably doesn't make you feel any better today but it'll be worth it in the end mate. That's the good thing about the journals as you show the ups and the downs. Everyone can see what you go through to get to the finished article.
Thanks for all suggestions, this website is so good and helpful for people like me. Kept fish for a while but getting a bit more serious about a few planted tanks I have. Asked three plant quesions yesterday and all been answered by lots of helpful people. Thanks.
I'd not thought of that but as I keep rainbows removing them is out the question.
Thanks Ender, I'll try a plastic tap and knock the airflow down a bit. Good to see another fellow Rainbow keeper on here.
Thanks Big Tom, I'll be sure to look that up.
Yeah, I like this but wasn't sure how it would fare. Cheers Iain, love your scapes btw.
Cheers nick, another to consider especially if it's doing ok for you.
Hi all, sorry I'm posting a lot of questions today but I'm determined to sort my nano tank. Its a 30cm aqua one cube and I'm looking for a small leaved stem that will do well in low tec conditions. Does anyone have any suggestions? I wasn't sure how Bacopa Monnieri would fare?
Hi, I work in the nursery business and I don't recognise it either. I would agree that because it's leaves look so healthy there's nothing to worry about.Just googled a hunch and I think it is a cork tree so the bark peeling is natural. Tell your mum to sell the bark to her nearest vineyard! ;)
I have tried lots of different floaters in my main tank but they all eventually give up. I'm thinking it's because of the movement caused by my air stone at night. Can anyone recommend anything that survives surface movement. I have glass covers so the massive pistia is out.
Hi all, my Marsilea Hirsuta which has only been planted in a small low tec aqua one nano has gone a bit brown. Is this ok and will it pick up or is it a lost cause? I planted it in Tmc nutrasoil and it's got a good flow going round at the moment. The light is the standard 9w that come with the...
I really like this scape Joel and I've taken inspiration and tried something similar but very early days still. I'll be well please if it ends up like this one.
I'm always on the lookout at work for wood for scapes and found some really nice pieces yesterday. It's definitely dead but feels weighty. I think it's rhododendron, is that going to be ok in a tank. I know they like acidic soil but wasn't sure if they have any acidicity in themselves that would...
Just wondering if anyone has used Acer wood before. Someone on another forum said he used it in his tanks and I have some but was nervous about using it. Be great if I can as it's really nice shaped.
Thanks, I did think about drilling holes but didn't know how easy that would be. I think I may have to redo the bracing. I'm a bit nervous about that but I'm pretty good from a diy point of view so I'll give it a go. Anyone else done that and could offer any tips?
Hi, just bought a second hand 4ft clear seal tank so my bows have more swimming space. On closer inspection I see that because of the bracing there is only a tiny 20mm hole in each corner. I want to run 2 eheim 2215's and I'm not sure how I can get them to fit. Any suggestions please? Has anyone...
Cracking couple of tanks, I think they look great. Can I ask please in the photo of the waterline on 19th jan the fern seems to be coming out of the water, is that because it's growth has spilled over from the filter (it was planted in the filter?)? Also, if the fern is coming from the filter...
I've just bought a nice portion of micranthemum Monte Carlo to try and carpet a bit of the foreground in my tank. My substrate is jbl manado and I was hoping someone could give me some tips regarding planting the micranthemum. Should I just shove small pieces in or try and pin them down? The...
