Sorry to hear about the discus Steve. But great to hear the algae issues you've been having seem to be resolved and your plants are doing good. :)
Daniel
After some debugging it turns out my bubble counter is limiting the flow... No idea why, but my bazooka is perfectly fine. Now I just have to replace my bubble counter... Mystery solved!
Some bad news. Tonight I lost a shrimp when I was asleep. When I woke up the little guy was dead and dried out on the floor :(
It must have jumped out for some reason...
I know how you feel. When I first started my high tech tank I wanted to cut corners and got myself a corner filter which was for tanks up to 60L. I figured this would be ok for a tank of 64L because there would be rocks, soil etc in it. Upon installing it turned out to have a flow of 120L per...
Turns out this high tech stuff has it's ups and down (who knew ). So when I first flooded the tank installed an UP inline diffuser. The second day I found out it was leaking CO2 and on when I tried to fix it, it broke, even though I was being careful. As a quick fix I installed an...
Yesterday I installed my new bazooka atomizer. But after just one day of running (at 3,5 bar) I can't up my bps above about 1 bps, even with my needle valve all the way open. When I remove the bazooka the CO2 flow in the tube is just fine. So it appears to me the bazooka is blocking the CO2...
So I was looking at the first scape photo and I was like: Such a shame the rocks are so low in this tank. Then I scrolled down and I was like: WOW, thats why!
Beautiful hardscape so far mate!
About the dry start. Why wouldn't you be able to do it? The cling film is there to keep up the...
Ok, seems I have been underdosing for a while haha. Thanks for letting me look at the bottle again
The LED lights I was talking about uses T8 adapters that means they will fit right into your hood.
The following it is not really a guideline, because it's all about the PAR your...
If you are looking to upgrade your lights, there are a couple of LED lights that fit into TL fittings with an adapter. Eheim powerled or Arcadia if I'm correct and maybe other brands aswel. But the most obvious solution is to get your other light invited to the party ;-)
If you keep the lights...
I would suggest you go looking around the forum in the (featured) journals for inspiration. When you find plants you like research if they will be suitable for your setup. If the plant species aren't mentioned you can ask around on the forum what they are. Also great for inspiration...
What an amazing looking tank. And the fact you just have a couple of tanks in your cabinet including a 200 L makes me jealous. I don't think I can fit much in the cabinet under my 64L lol. I hope your plants keep recovering! :-)
I proudly present to you my new secret (not so secret) weapon against my ammonia and nitrite during the cycling of the tank: my DIY Python. Those who do not know what it is have a look on Amazon. My problem was that they don't even sell these in the Netherlands and it's wicked expensive for what...
Quick update before lights on:
As you can see the water is turning green. This happens every day. Last night I did a large water change (about 60%) just before lights out and the water was pretty clear when I did. Now the water is pretty green again and it would seem unlikely that this would...
Just to clearify. I really love the concept of wood/roots sticking out of the water, I just don't think this particular piece of wood complements the rocks very well. But maybe it's just the color of it that's offsetting. I don't know how it will look when wet.
What a great love story! But I already kind of solved the situation. When I saw your post I showed it to my girlfriend and she loves it. Currently we don't live together but that shouldn't take long. Great thing she wants the same things as I do: big aquaria both salt and fresh water, turtles...
To be honest I'm not a big fan of the wood. But I like the rocks, the main stone is beautiful! I think you shouldn't try to make a "mountain" with them as the last picture, but use their natural beauty of what they are: river rocks. I like the placement in the first picture of the biggest rock...
Yeah, just the regular dose of EasyCarbo. The term "liquid CO2" is just fancy marketing. The active ingredient in in EasyCarbo have little to do with CO2. Thus dosing EasyCarbo will not increase your CO2 concentration in the water and not suffocate your (future) livestock or anything.
What's...
Wow, that H. Tripartita really took over!
My Eleocharis acicularis 'Mini' (dwarf hairgrass) is starting to invade my Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo' carpet. So soon I will have my own mixed species carpet. Wether I want it or not :P
I hope it turns out nice :-)
Hi Luke,
First off: beautiful scape and I especially love the wood!
I am also just a beginner when it comes to high(er)-tech tanks, but as many people helped me out I'll do my best for you :-)
Regarding liquid CO2: I would say yes. I dose liquid CO2 because it's good for the plants (don't...
Day 6 since the tank got flooded. I gave the DHG its first trim yesterday and growing like crazy. Well maybe not crazy for professional 10000 PAR high tech aquascapers, but since this is my first high-tech tank: being able to see noticable growth on daily basis is crazy :p
The Echinodorus...
I finally flooded my tank 5 days ago after a 6 week dry start. My plants seem to be doing great and I see no signs of any die-off/melting which is also great. I'm injecting CO2, dosing EI and EasyCarbo (same stuff as Excel). Because I have a spray bar installed I was able to get flow all the way...
I promise you will get them! I've been really busy the last couple of weeks. The time I had left I spend on the aquarium rather than keeping my journal updated, which is a shame ...
The dimmer does what it should, dim. However the remote/receiver seem very very weak. It could just be the...
Hi Jaap,
I have no clue about the controller. But I've you haven't ordered the light yet you could also order it from here: http://www.natureaquadesign.com/fr/eclairage/242-rampe-led-aquasky-chihiros.html
It's where I got mine. Shipping took about 3 days because they as based in France (I had...
So I got my UP inline atomizer in the mail, as wel as my CO2 regulator from CO2art, two 500 gram CO2 tanks second hand for a great price (My cabinet is pretty small so had little choice). I should almost be ready :-)
I will post an update about the dry start soon which is almost 2 weeks in...
That makes sense. I thought it was weird you would spend full retail price on a brand new light with a chihiro just lying around :-P
I'm definitely following this to see what happens in this giga PAR raygun setup [emoji2]
If I understand correctly you removed the CO2 that wasn't being used. Now with increased flow your water is probably having more surface movement expelling more CO2 from your tank. As a result your pH will rise. Furthermore the increased circulation could be picking/stirring up debris that has...
Just out of curiosity. Why a second ADA light? I previously read you were happy with Chihiro Aquasky and I've seen that you built an awesome LED light yourself! :-)
Interesting project. With the lights and the styrofoam you will probably get a nice temperature going. I would put a thermometer in there just to see how hot it gets.
But I think the pump for the water circulation is pretty pointless. I think diffusion will do the job just fine ;-)
I have studied biotechnology and this is a great pile of horse blahblahblahblah they are selling! They are claiming to have some form of super advanced (genetically modified???) uber bacteria to add to your aquarium and try to tell you your ordinaire run of the mill bacteria of both the competion and found...
The active ingredient for both Excel and EasyCarbo are the same: gluteraldehyde, which plants can use as carbon source (which is referred to liquid CO2 in marketing terms) and have the side effect of being toxic to many sorts of algae in low concentrations. Beware that it's toxic for just about...
Really cool stuff! Here in The Netherlands we don't have many places to find usable stuff for your aquarium. Let alone huge gorgeous pieces of wood. Beautiful!
Yeah, so far I'm happy with the light! The dimmer from ebay hasn't arrived yet. I will probably do a review when the dimmer arrives, but I already took a couple more pictures. Have a look at my imgur album (very pic heavy!), all pics I took are in there. As for the review sofar: unbox the...
So yesterday was my bday and that means only one thing:
CAKE :D
And to make the day more special my new light arrived!
The LEDs
Assembled. The acrylic stand is of really good quality. If you are not an expert and know the other lights you wouldn't know it's a cheap chinese knockoff. If...
Today my plants arrived! :)
Eleocharis acicularis mini
Micranthemum Monte Carlo
Echinodorus tenellus green
All plants are 1 2 grow plants from Tropica. I'm really happy with the quality of the plants. I started the DSM and hope it fills in nicely.
My Chihiro Aquasky 401 light has...
Small update on the filter cycling: it has run for about 36 hours in total now and I only added the sugar about 12 hours ago. The water has since turned very cloudy. I should have know better because by adding the sugar I have created near perfect conditions for bacteria using sugar as their...
I also ordered the extra remote control for dimming and turning it on and off from Ebay for next to nothing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aquarium-LED-Light-Crystal-20cm-60cm-of-Length-Tank-Fresh-Brightness-Control-/281324389494?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:NL:3160
It's the 201C remote.
Additionally I found an article that states that some (specific) species of cyanobacteria needs very low concentrations of PO4 to germinate, but standard aquarium sources that that BGA (not the species in the article!) need high PO4 to thrive. Maybe I will do some proper research on this topic...
So the place I ordered my plants "lied" about having the plants in stock. I think their website can't display products that aren't in stock. They were kind enough to call me the day before yesterday and tell me the plants will be shipped to them on monday to guarantee maximum plant quality and...
Hi TonyTony,
Thanks so much again for letting me know this light excists. I already knew the ADA Aquasky, but there isn't one available for my tank size. After many hour and hours of surfing the web looking for the best deal I just ordered mine here...
Thank you so much for this info. This gave me enough confidence to order the 401 for my 40cm Eheim tank! :-)
Thank you TonyTony for pointing out the existence of the 401 to me. As far as I know ADA doesn't even make the 401 (any more?)...
I think the basis of your experiment is sound. However it is of vital importance your biosystem (read: the tank and all it's content) are as close to equilibrium as possible. This is important because this is also the case in your "real" tanks. Because you have a fixed dosing schedual, fixed...
Very interesting discussion!
I am not a plant biologist but would like to add my 2 cents because I studied Life Science and Technology which has alot to do with cells, enzymes etc etc :-)
I would first like to respond to the above reaction of CO2: CO2 is the carbon source used by plants. And...
Yeah it's one option I considered. But I don't really like the design of lamp and it's 67 pound. That's a lot of money for something you want to replace as soon as you have the funds. I have been looking if I can find one second hand (eBay etc) but so far no luck :(
A small update as I just ordered my plants :D
Eleocharis acicularis mini
Micranthemum Monte Carlo
Echinodorus tenellus green
I hope to get them in the mail friday or saterday, that way I can take my time planting it all and getting my Dry Start going this weekend :)
I also hope someone will...
I'm in the process of building my first Iwagumi (see my journal) and it was pointed out my current light (that came with the tank) just wouldn't cut it. This was something I expected when I bought my tank and am now looking for a light that suits my needs:
At the lowest point in my tank the...
After a lot of thinking and looking around for better lighting I have decided not to use HC Cuba. Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo' seems to be a lot more forgiving in a less high tech/high light setup and I have also fallen in love with Eleocharis acicularis 'Mini' from Tropica (more info). I think a...
Good news! It seems my filter issues are solved. Tomorrow I'm picking up an Eheim 2222 external filter for a great price :-)
What do you guys think about using the dry start method using my current setup while I figure out what to do with my CO2 setup and proper lighting? As the current light...
Hi Jordi,
Thanks for your reply! If I did a dry start (DSM) with HC, would the light be enough? This would give the HC time to root and grow while I sort out my flow, lighting and CO2 "issues". Let me know what you think :-)
Daniel
Hello all,
I'm Daniel, 27 and from The Netherlands. This is my first post as I'm new to the forum but I have been lurking and reading up for the last couple of weeks. About 5 years ago I've had 4 planted nano aquaria of about 25 liters which ran for two years. I then moved and unfortunately had...
