    BGA in Akadama

    I just suck it out.
  14. john dory

    BGA in Akadama

Manual removal,is the key. Periodic cleaning of the glass(below substrate level)ensures continued absence.
  15. john dory

    BGA in Akadama

Like removing a tumour. Take the growth...and a margin.
  16. john dory

    BGA in Akadama

just remove it,whenever you see it. You don't have to do a full blown water change,everytime..just enough to eradicate all visible BGA. dig down, into the substrate,a little bit...it loves to hide there.

    Modern External filter design

Whole heartedly agree. Never had any problems with filters,in the 35 years I've been keeping fish..but the biomaster 600t,trumps anything I've had,in the past. The ease of maintenance, plus the inbuilt heater are 2 features I could no longer be without.

Algae from hell - aggressive growth of basically every type in a 4 month old tank

I wouldn't know anything about that..Darrell. But you crash the filter with chems, and you're in the realms off"fish in cycle" Ottos can't take it
  20. john dory

Algae from hell - aggressive growth of basically every type in a 4 month old tank

I was thinking the filter may have been impeded. Been adding high doses of glut? Hydrogen peroxide? Could be the filter not coping with extra ammonia released by rescapes. Otto need very clean water.
  21. john dory

Algae from hell - aggressive growth of basically every type in a 4 month old tank

It'll probably be ammonia/nitrite poisoning, caused by an unstable environment.

    Providing 'just enough' CO2

You grow a healthy sword(low tech)and then give it a bit of gas. The difference is obvious. If you're aiming for"just enough"i would set the tank up as a low tech...the extra co2 being a booster.
  25. john dory

    Using Easycarbo

Oxygen diffuser in reverse cycle off c02/lighting period - why wouldnt you...

My plants are"awake"long before my photo period starts....but there's no co2! This wouldn't happen naturally. Those early risers would get first dibs on the co2 that had accumulated during darkness.

Oxygen diffuser in reverse cycle off c02/lighting period - why wouldnt you...

Thing that puzzles me is...Naturally,co2 would be increasing during the night.

I've had similar, were I've cut a couple of pieces of metal to fit tight across the width. That was only to rest tubes on...though. Not sure I'd fancy doing it with a twinstar, unless there was an inner lid.
  86. john dory

    Light upgrade fluval Roma 125

Does your tank have internal bracing or an inner lid? If so,you could get the pendant version of twinstar..and just rest it on top. That's what I had to do with my tank.

Fluval 407 vs OASE Thermo 600

I replaced the pre filter sponges with ones I made from the coarse sponges, that are supplied in the main filter body. This left one intact, which remains in the bottom tray. Lower light CO2 tank

In my experience,it's the cheaper generic"bogwood"type, that are worse. Usually stored out side in great big piles;) Does subside though..with regular scrubbing. Pita,if it's not easily removed.

    Lower light CO2 tank

As you say..probably the wood, leaching organics. I have 3 large pieces of wood in my new set up. One has to be scrubbed weekly, while the other 2,remain clean. Don't think lowering the light will help.
