Hi, I would guess you have bought emersed plants that are transitioning so it is normal for old leaves to be melting.

Both tanks have a layer of sifted potting soil underneath. I use Tropica specialised for the water column.

To illustrate the difference in growth I give you Lagenadra in sand and the sad specimen in the gravel tank . Of course I realise many other factors could be at play but the overall idea is that all plants that I have used in sand do better in most cases.

I might take you on this since the paludarium seems to be full of detritus worms and other microorganisms that the pygmies would enjoy. The other thing in my mind is to cover the substrate with leaf litter and but a few of micro rasboras.

Ludwigia repens , Hygrophila 53B are two that I currently keep and grow fine without co2. Also Liknophilla sessiflora, Hygrophila Difformis and Hemianthus micranthemoides.

I have successfully used plastic window mesh in the past in a tank full of crypts that had grown their roots through the little holes. Having said that I have stopped using anything to retain the soil because it doesn't allow Malaysian trumpet snails churning the soil.

Careful cause this stuff is really potent. First time I used it I ended up tearing the tank because it burned all the plant roots. I still use it but as mentioned by @foxfish I follow Dennis Wong's method and just use a few balls instead of a full capsule.
