    144 liter low tech

Hi Rodgie I never had amazon frogbit in there, I got the plants mixed up when you asked me a few questions back. I had duckweed in there. And the duckweed grew a lot despite the 1000 l/h filter and the Hydor Koralia powerhead which puts out 900 l/h. I used to have some spiky moss on the wood...

    144 liter low tech

Hi Mort Thank you for the reply. I also think this tank looks good right now. But only a few weeks back it was completely overplanted, the valisneria was running everywhere, a huge wisteria was soaking up all the light and so on... so, the open space only just came back... I hope I can keep it...

    144 liter low tech

Hi Rodgie Photoperiod is still only 6 hours, maybe I should turn it up to 7, but on the other hand, tank is doing with 6 hours... I also have to change the light bulbs soon, and that will increase the light strength, so maybe I should just stay at 6 hours, change the light bulbs, and if the...

    144 liter low tech

Hi Rodgie Thanks for the reply. Regarding the Co2, I wanted the plants to really take off. And they did. For a while, but then during the summer holiday I was away from the tank for periods of time, and the balances, co2, ferts etc. got twisted, and it turned into an algae party. I have spend...

I'm a moss lover too! I want to do a complete moss scape at some point. Regarding whether the spiky will crawl and attach to the branch it's already on, I'm thinking the amount of flow has something to say. So in my tank I don't think it will crawl and attach very well because of the relatively...

    144 liter low tech

I had a hydor pico powerhead on first, it shifted the sand a lot more. The one I'm currently using, the one in the picture is actually putting out more l/h, but does it more gently because of the 'open' propellerhead. I think I might be collecting more debris and stuff in the aquarium because of...

Day 61, small update A few days ago I decided to remove the leaves that my trident java fern came with when I first bought it at the LFS. Reason was that the leaves weren't adapting to their new home, but were slowly dissolving and I was afraid it might cause algae problems. So I removed them...

    144 liter low tech

Day 56: Time for an update! I'm thinking this journal could be called '144 liters of I've changed my mind'... I have made a lot of changes to the setup. I'm a tinkerer I guess. As mentioned in an earlier post, I've added co2, so this is not a low tech anymore. Co2 is distributed via a jbl...

Hi Dominik. Thank you for your reply. It was just tannins. It has cleared up nicely now. :) I've had vals before and they also melted, it has just been much more pronounced this time, but some of them are bouncing back now.

    144 liter low tech

Day 9. Everything is pretty much still in transition. New growth is showing on moss, tenellum and H. Siamensis 53B. My valisneria Nana are melting bad, dunno why. I hope it bounces back soon. I have added some more fast growing stem plants. I have also decided to use CO2. I know it'll cost me...

    144 liter low tech

Day 4. I have changed 25% of the water with water that have degassed and acclimatized to room temperature. I read that water directly from the tap could be high in co2, and that it would be a good idea to let it degas before putting it in the aquarium, so it doesn't cause co2 fluctuations...

Haha, you're spot on, it's nefa lights, but the square bike light ones - I could fit two of them inside my pendant... But seriously, you got one thing right, it's a bulb of some sort...

Hi Joe Thanks for the response on the hardscape! A hint towards the light: lumen wise it is roughly the same as a 24w T5... :p The light is really quite an experiment, and if it doesn't work out, I have a T5 fixture that I will put above the tank.

    Light for 150 gallon / 588L tank

Sounds very reasonable to invest in quality light to begin with, I am one of those people that have invested in cheap lighting without enough versatility - and it just becomes a nuisance in the long term.

    144 liter low tech

Hi Roadmaster I'm glad you like the layout, I take that as my work with making a hardscape that gives the eye something interesting to look at, is paying off. Bucephalandra is really great idea, only thing with buce is that they are pretty hard to come by in aquarium stores where I live, and...

    Light for 150 gallon / 588L tank

Hi ormet What kind of planted tank are you aiming for? Low tech, high tech? I think that definitely has something to say in regards to light. Also, what kind of budget are you working with? If you're not on a limited budget you could take a look at Kessil leds. You would probably need a few...

    Roots of change

Very nice plant placement, Alex. You have definitely achieved a natural look. It's a very good idea to fill up with plants and judge the setup and planting thoroughly the before filling with water. I will remember that idea. :-)

    144 liter low tech

Hi Robbie Thank you for your response. I am planning to cover a lot of the wood in moss, and I might also place some moss covered stones at substrate level, for instance among the big stones. I am going to start up with easy mosses, and if all goes well, I have been thinking about trying some...

    144 liter low tech

Hi Imak Thank you for your response. I have tried to keep the layout simple and easy to maintain, I think this is very important when going low tech since a high tech setup requires more light spread, more circulations pumps and so on... and I want this to be really low tech. The wood is from...

Hi everyone I am starting up a low tech planted tank and would like to share the process with you all at this fantastic site. I have been preparing this setup for a month or two, but if you see any faults with my setup, please don't hesitate to let me know. Tank: 144 liters (80x40x45, custom...

    Around the old tree

Hi Alex Very nice scape, thanks for sharing. I was wondering how often you did water change and also how much water you changed? I am currently setting up a low tech tank and are very interested in hearing what others have done with regards to water change.

Thank you Troi. I think I'll trim and replant some of the the ludwigia this weekend, it certainly has grown in very well.

    110 liter DSM

I have had a lot of headache over the flow in my setup. Firstly, the powerhead 900 l/h + bucket filter 5-600 l/h was simply too much. It was especially evident on my Hottonia Palustris which were bending more and more in the direction of the flow (next time I make a setup I will remember to keep...

Thanks Ian. I just hope I can keep it tidy and well-trimmed when that time comes - still very unexperienced with regards to trimming.

    Windowsill Nature

First time I've seen this tank. Beautiful work and an inspiration, especially in terms of being low cost, low energy and having a sustainabillity dimension. Whether we like it or not, this hobby is not sustainable at all (wild caught fish, gigantic energy consumption in green houses...

My custom build shallow tank RESCAPE (The 3 Peaks)

Really nice work Jonny, congratulations on the results. I look forward to seeing your scape. Did you also make the turning light-"pole" yourself?

    110 liter DSM

Time to update. The tank has been going steady for 16-17 days now, and everything is progressing well. I'm still running 6 hours of daily lighting, co2 and have begun dosing 5 ml daily fertilizer (began a week ago or so). I'll up the light to 8 hrs. daily in 5-7 days or so, if the positive...

    110 liter DSM

Found this quote from an article by Takashi Amano on another forum: "...An important point for attaching a member of the fern family is to cut off old leaves of ferns, such as Bolbitisand Microsorum, as much as possible before attaching them to driftwood. Old mature leaves do not easily adapt...

    110 liter DSM

Hi everyone I planted the final plants stemplants and such yesterday and flooded the tank. The dry start has been going very well, I really love that method. During the dry start, which lasted something like 18 days, I had to change the lighting period to 8 hours as it seemed a bit too much...

Dear ukaps I've been an avid reader on ukaps, and have been in awe of some of the tanks in here. I have decided to participate more actively on this site by starting my own journal. I've had various kinds of tank setups, all with a focus on plants, and thought I'd share my newest project...
