I do live in London. South East in Thamesmead. I would love to get some old media if it will help speed up the process.
I'm mainly doing it to avoid algae and save money on the water bill
Sent from my SM-S918B using Tapatalk
So after many many years I've decided to comeback into the hobby. I've got the tank setup and running (soil and hardscape all setup).
To avoid algae issues and constant water changes I decided to go through the 'Dark Start' method where you cycle the tank with no plants and light.
I did add...
I read that having the lights low when the plants are transitioning help to reduce the out break of algae.
Im using a combination of miracle grow all purpose granules, tropica plant substrate and fluval stratum. It's not as nutrient rich as ADA but it was all I had lying around in my house...
So you've planted a bunch of in-virto plants and have flooded the tank. You got the co2 running, lights on and filter flowing. Now what?
Currently with my tank, some of the plants are melting back (which is to be expected), the light is on the lowest setting running for 6 hours and co2 is on...
It's a new tube that hasn't been used yet and no it's not running.
Right now I'm using my spare single stage reg which is working fine.
Honestly this push fitting is a really stupid idea when we are dealing with high pressure systems
Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Hello, I've run into a really annoying issue with my regulator. The stupid c02 tubing keeps popping off the push fitting. I had my psi set to 40 and I'm using an intank bazooka diffuser.
Is there a way to remove the push fit and replace it with a lock screw fitting instead?
I had to remove the stupid redmoor wood as it was building up green white and stringy mold on the surface. None of the other plants or rocks seem to be affected.
I've also decided to leave two vent holes while still doing 7 minute air time everyday.
After re misting it a few hours ago the wood has gone dry again. Tbh it's not a lot of moss since it's just small chopped blended parts.
On the positive side, after two days I'm actually seeing growth on some of the carpet plants and the moss on the lava rock is still damp.
After the 2...
In that case I'm alright. I'll let the moss dry out because the last thing I need is too much moisture to the cause mold.
Like I said I have also of extra moss that I didn't use
That's just wonderful. And I actually soaked the wood for a good 3 weeks. Fortunately I saved some of the left over moss in containers I have misted and left near the window to grow so I can re use it when the tank is read to be flooded.
I actually though high temperature was a bad thing. I now...
@Tim Harrison did your moss ever look as dry as this
My hygrometer is saying the humidity is still 99% but the moss on the wood looks really dry. The ones on the rocks still look damp
I'm using a combination of miracle gro all purpose pellets the bottom, 1 litre of tropica plant substrate and it's caped off with 4L of Fluval Stratum (Normally I would use ada Amazonia but my LFS that sold them cheap moved and I forgot the new address)
Well I've done it..sort of. I finished planting all the carpeting plants (took a good 2hrs but was nice an relaxing). I had so many plants that I couldn't plant them all so I have them stored in plastic containers near the window with the same substrate setup as my tank.
Unfortunately my...
I bought these to plants and I was informed that crenata grows smaller than hirsita but from the packs I got it's the opposite.
You think the person made a mistake and put them in the wrong bags or is this just normal?
He there, I live in South East london as well and recently bought wood for my nano aquascape I'm doing.
I bought this wood from eBay cause no shop had the detail I wanted. Just type "redmoor wood" into ebay and you'll get plenty of options.
Shops you can get wood and rocks from are:
Wholesale...
Thank you guys so much for the advice and help. My small desk light arrived (which I'm using in a different tank) so I'm now able to use my old beamswork led unit for dry start.
Hopefully during the next 6-8 weeks my
Chihiros a-series unit arrive and ready for when I flood it. Fingers crossed...
Right so then would it be a good idea for me to just leave a small permanent opening on the film to make sure it doesn't get to humid, while still opening the film every day for 5 minutes?
Thanks Tim, I actually read all the pages of your journal for that tank yesterday as well and It was very helpful. Nothing short of amazing
I did read however that misting the plants, more specifically the carpeting plants actually causes the leave a to rot due to water droplets sitting on the...
I'm preparing to do a dry start method with both carpeting plants and mosses (since they will all come in their emersed form).
I literally spent the whole of yesterday reading articles, forum posts and videos on this method and there is a lot of conflicting information which is confusing me...
I've been reading and watching videos to recap on this hobby again after a long break
I saw a video where someone said that I have to do water changes everyday for the first week, then every other day for the next 3 week's. Then after that I can do weekly water changes.
Is this necessary...
So I decided to come back after about 3 years, I looked through my old equipment and saw that I still have my old Marco and micro mix in a bottle. Can I still use them after three years? If I recall I pre mixed it with ei ferts and used pure ro water
Cheers for that.
So far I have cleaned my filter and removed all the brown algae in the tubing etc. Cleaned my diffuser, removed as much physical algae as I could and decreased the lighting significantly.
Hopefully my plants will recover and things can start moving again
Right so I started a new scape a few weeks ago and at the start it was good. The monte carlo carpet was growing fast and the moss was transitionin well.
Then after 1 1/2 weeks I decided to dose my ei ferts (I hadn't used it in several months). A few weeks later I get this brown algae plague. I...
Hello Aquascapers, I have come back from a long retirement from this hobby and decided to rescape my dull tank.
My current idea for the scape:
-use a mix of weeping moss and spiky moss on the lava rocks
- use flame moss for the rear of the tank
- have a mix of monte carlo and DHG in the front...
There was a time I dosed 5x the recommended amount of excel in a tank filled with shrimp. Didn't do a thing to then.

Give it time. My monte carlo and HC melted but then exploded in growth afterwards. Took a few months though for the carpet to form. But make sure you have sttong flow and stable c02 levels.

I cant seem to beat mine but i have come to a temporary truce. It doesnt grow on my plants. Only my bonsai trees.
It gives a really nice aged look. As if a weird fungus was growing on it. I dont mind it. But i think when i put fish and shrimp back in the tank again it will dose some diy excel...
I started with a glass diffuser but saw that it was creating big bubbles and would break really easily.
I went through a couple of those until i moved to the bazooka. This is a really nice diffuser, especially when its next to high flow. The mist is nice and i was able to lower to bubbles per...
Well i can say my tank is literally growing its self now. After i purged the dwarf baby tears and monte carlo carpet. Alot of other plants died and had to be removed. But after a few weeks something really cool happened.
Out of the flames, a new carpet plants started to tank over. Dwarf...
Unfortunately my pictures are on my broken iPhone so can't get them back. I could use my Sony but the quality is pants.
Sunday evening I will do an update on my post or create a new one entirely.

Ahhh yes I took that down long time ago and actually made a new setup. It was going well but then I got carried away with another project and neglected the tank. Once I deal with the algae I will show my new forest scape.
So far it's my favourite since the scape really feels really instead of...
Yeah, so I got a bit lazy (more like lost interest altogether) and didn't keep up with my maintenance. And ohhh how I have been punished for my sins.
Because I had my co2 off for months, lights on for 10hrs, zero nutrient dosing and zero water changes, my tank is more of an algae garden than a...
Well I was using 4bps with my dumb glass diffuser then I was able to cut it does to 2bps when I switched to bazooka diffuser (note my drop checker Is always yellow so I could go lower).
I need to clean my inline diffuser then use it at 1.5 bps to keep my drop checker yellow.
Sent from my...
Yeah I need to clean the hoses again.
Though wouldn't using a hose cleaner in a diffuser damage the ceramic?
In fact how do clean these inlines where you can't remove the disk
The issue is that this problem started only recently. So building pressure and being patient isn't the issue.
I'm switching to my intank bazooka. But I will test the inline diffuser with my spare regulator and co2 tank
Sent from my D2303 using Tapatalk
this is the one i use: http://www.co2supermarket.co.uk/inline-atomizer-co2-diffuser-intense-12-16-tubing-p18.html
could i have a link to the old version please
At first I thought it was a problem with the regulator but when I replaced it I still got the same issue. The bubble rate will decrease right after I increased it.
So I did a test with different bubble counters and check valves I had lying around. With all of the combinations I did, the bubble...
Thanks man
I have actually got my staghorn issue under control. I cleaned my tubing, increased my water changes and filter maintenance. Also I increases my flow and co2.
I also bought an inline diffuser for better diffusion
Well this update is more of a bad day.
So after buying my new regulator, thinking my old one was broken, I discovered I had a leak. The issue was that I honestly couldn't find it.
At first I thought it was my check valve because the plastic screw had cracked
But when I replaced it with my...
I bought a new regulator since oil got into my old one. For the first day it was fine. But then afterwards I couldn't increase or decrease my bubble rate using the needle valve.
Could there be a leak in the regulator?

Quick update.
So far not much has changed with the scape except for a few things.
My battle against various algae seems to be going rather well. After doing a three day blackout, increasing flow and co2 and spot treating my plants with a 50/50 mix of h202 and excel all the algae is...
I see. Damn due to my stubbornness I bought another batch of grass with some root tabs.
But I have taken your message and I will do things that way from now on. Cheers
Sent from my D2303 using Tapatalk
I'm having a weird problem. I'm finding it a lot easier to grow Eloecharis A way easier than Eloecharis P even though P has access to more flow, co2 and has good light the plant is stunned in growth. I end up buying new pots and batches of grass to replant but I still have this issue. Mind you...
So far im happy with the growth, I just need to deal with the regulator and algae business.
Also I am very happy with the misting from the online diffuser.

Sunday update.
So after discovering that my staghorn algae issue was slowly creeping back I decided to take action by dosing 2-3x of excel on the mosses and grass most effected, mowed down the grass(including the infected grass) , did a 50% water change and increased my flow and co2 rate...
Yeah I noticed a similar thing. Before my temperatures were around 26c and I would see shrimp everywhere with a lot of pregnant females, but since I lowered the temp for better plant growth (21-23) their breeding rate is slower
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I just enjoy it because it feels like your creating your own world and managing the life within it even to a microscopic scale
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It's fine I already bought an intense in line diffuser from co2supermarket (I get more discounts with them). It's been running perfectly so far. Noticed new froth from my dwarf hair grass and mosses

Update
So my inline diffuser came today
I was weirdly surprised at how big it was, thinking I bought the wrong size.
But any ways, it took me a while to hook everything up since it was my first time.
I read a lot about inline diffusers and that a lot of them have leak issues especially...
You do know this is a very small and broad coursework. I can't measure everything because I have define them in a language called PDDL. Which I simply can't do because it's not possible.
This isn't supposed to actually work in real life, it's only a very broad and general approach to it.
I...
Thanks, yeah I will try that if I can find him.
I haven't seen my amano shrimp eating him so I'm sure he is somewhere in the tank.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm not actually gonna make this. I'm only making a plan (defining my domain and goal states) . I'm not doing a Kickstarter or anything like that.
How I'm gonna measure the co2 levels isn't that important. What's important is trying to figure out what variables will effect the co2 and how to...
Did not know that. Definitely keep that in mind though
I will just increment/decrement the ppm levels over time depending on which tank is being dosed co2 at a given time during the photoperiod
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yep that's exactly what I wanted. The coursework doesn't really require a 100% accurate measurement nor does that plan have to actually work in real life(if it had to it would be beyond my knowledge and capability).
Thanks for the link I will check it out.
Also another's question or scenario...
Hi guys, I have a university project where and making a plan for a Co2 controller system.
I wanted to ask you guys if you have an estimate or even a guess of how much one bubble of Co2 takes away from the intank psi of a Co2 cylinder.
Ignore the extra variables and factors. I just need a guess...
So I did a post about my tank a while backed last year when it was called Eden Gate.
Though at the beginning of the 2016 I started planning out how to rescape it to make it look better.
Before the rescape my tank was in quite a bad condition. There was staghorn algae all over the mosses, my...
I know this isn't the best way to show it, but you can see a huge difference in how much light the rocks on the right are (shaded region) getting in comparison to the rocks in the far left.
Sent from my D2303 using Tapatalk
Thanks for the reply, although Spiky moss wasn't the moss I was interested in using (it's actually the moss I removed from the lava rock prior to this post
Sent from my D2303 using Tapatalk
Wow thank you. Yeah I should give more details. My rocks are lava rock
The two big lava rocks at the front are exposed to high since there isn't much shade, however, the two smaller rocks further down will be exposed to probably low light light.
The two rocks here are exposed to medium...
So I'm doing a bit of replanting and I wanted some suggestions on mosses I could use on my rocks (some rocks are exposed to high light while others have meduim - low light).
Sent from my D2303 using Tapatalk
I do water changes weekly 50-70% depending on how much I trim back.
But I clean my filter monthly. Haven't cleaned my tubing at all, but I have ordered a tube cleaner brush.
Sent from my D2303 using Tapatalk
So I checked my tank saw that a particular batch of weeping moss has Staghorn algae all over it.
What I'm confused about is that:
1. That area has high flow (the moss is constantly moving gently)
2. Has the best access to co2 (micro bubbles are hitting it more because it's elevated by...
