    My first tank!

OK, so it's not a patch on some of the wondrous tanks on here, but the plants have been in for 3-4 weeks now and they're still alive, which has to count for something! The tank is 160 litres and has my two poor little stunted comet goldfish in it (I was given them by a neighbour). They have...

    Fancy Goldfish Tank

You've inspired me to post my goldfish tank. Your fish are lovely. I liked the piles of slate set up. I'd be interested to see what you do with your new tank (not that I'm jealous at all, no not at all... ;)).

    Tiny white mite?

I am seeking superior knowledge... :D... My tank is still cycling so there are no fish in it yet. I've just been looking at the plants in it and I noticed a very tiny white mite or bug of some kind running up a plant stem. It reminded me of the tiny red spider mites you find on sunny walls, only...

    High tech, low tech

Eeeeeeeeeeek! That's a very flourishing, erm, algaescape you have there... I do have lots of floating plants (courtesy of Darrel) and have just started adding Seachem Flourish Excel. Plus the lights are on for only 6-7 hours/day. Hopefully that will keep any algae in check.

Cycling tank with plants in it (not sure it qualifies as a planted tank!!)

Yes leap I am still interested in bettas! And, erm, well, I do have a telly which my sister gave me, but no licence, so I never watch it. It's taking up space. I would be lying if I said it hadn't crossed my mind to sell it and put a fish tank there instead...

Cycling tank with plants in it (not sure it qualifies as a planted tank!!)

An update on the big tank - I added more bonsai clay as the darned plants kept floating to the surface grrr. They seem to be anchored in place now. Water is crystal clear. I have ordered some Seachem Flourish Excel, will turn the temp up a degree or two and switch the light on for 6-7 hours a...

    27 Liter Planted Aquarium

I know this is an old thread but I was searching for 'daylight bulb' and this came up. I have a bog-standard daylight bulb and, having seen this, I now know I can go ahead and try it out on my little tank. With appropriate precautions against it getting wet, of course! You have a lovely tank...

Online learning courses/Horticulture, landscaping, garden design

This is a really useful list - thank you! I know the Open University also do some free online courses, but I have no idea if gardening is among them.

What other hobby's do you have?

There are so many talented people on here! My hobbies are quite mundane (especially compared to building minion stoves!). I have a dog. I enjoy terrestrial gardening, and I love reading so much that I'm allowed to take 12 books out of the local libraries instead of just 6 :). I'm quite good at...

    Just wanted to say...

... how useful and friendy I've found this site. I'm completely new to fishkeeping and aquatic plants and have found so much information here. It seems that other members are very willing to hold the hand of newbies and take time to explain things. So a big thank you from me!

Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes... what are yours?

So, I've had my fish for a fortnight (rescued from a neighbour, currently in a storage tub whilst big tank cycles - the goldfish that is, not the neighbour!). Already I have made sooo many mistakes. Mistake number 1 - rushing out and buying test strips, filter aid bacteria and plastic plants. I...

Cycling tank with plants in it (not sure it qualifies as a planted tank!!)

You might want another tank to dry start as well :) Stoppit! I have two heated propagators for my 'land plants' so the DSM would definitely be a possibility but I don't need any more encouragement! Plus my parents are already worried about my eccentricities - if they come to visit and the...

There'll be lots of 'oopsies' along the way, no doubt...

Thanks Scootamum. So far the goldies have shown very little interest in any plants other than elodea. They are five years old (although very stunted, only 3-4 inches body length) and the only plant they were ever given was floating elodea, so that's probably why they leave the java fern and...

Cycling tank with plants in it (not sure it qualifies as a planted tank!!)

OK - I will remove the stocking of fish food (it's not a full stocking!) for a start and see what's what in the morning. I have just bought another tank from ebay (naughty I know, but it's a real bargain) so will pop the goldies in there with all the substrate and filter from the storage...

There'll be lots of 'oopsies' along the way, no doubt...

Hello, I'm a complete beginner (some would say complete numtpy) from Manchester, just starting out with two rescued goldfish and a large tank. I've already made several 'oopsies' but thankfully the fish seem to be OK - they are currently in a storage tub having daily water changes so that I can...

Cycling tank with plants in it (not sure it qualifies as a planted tank!!)

Thank you, Martin in China. I stuck a stocking with a handful of goldfish flakes in it into the tank last night and put the heater in. I added some gunk to the filter pads from the filter that is in the fishes' temporary home. This morning I woke up to a cloudy tank and the smell is all over the...

OK... thank you... I'll give it a go! This is what they arrived in: [/IMG] This is what they're in now: The orange one is Bopp and the pale on is Halley And this is what they should be going into when it's cycled... Obviously the plants need time to grow too. [/IMG] [/IMG]

Cycling tank with plants in it (not sure it qualifies as a planted tank!!)

Hi, I'm completely new to fishkeeping and find the amount of information on cycling a tank completely overwhelming, although I do understand the basic ammonia to nitrite to nitrate then water change to remove nitrates cycle generally, and that the bacteria are most concentrated in the filter. I...

    Help, disconbobulated!

I am celebrating because the fish have eaten the peas I gave them . The first time I tried, they spat them out, but now I've had them for a fortnight and they are more settled. Matt I think I can remove the starter motors for the fluorescent tubes so will give that a go. I have...

    Help, disconbobulated!

Thank you, have done that! Realised that the filter is where the ammonia needs to be for the bacteria to colonise, so i will set up with the bioclear filters first and read more about the carbon stuff later.

    Help, disconbobulated!

Just re-read this, Matt. Looks like I will have to keep a very careful eye on how the supplied filters do since yours are 4x more powerful than mine - although I'll only have the two fish. There is just so much to learn!

    Help, disconbobulated!

Thank you Alto. Those pots are a great idea. I can see this getting addictive - although perhaps not with the goldfish tank because I don't want it to be too heavily planted, just enough vegetation for the fish to swish through as their natural habitat wouldn't be underwater jungle! The 'filter...

    Help, disconbobulated!

Hello Alto and Matt, thank you for replying. I will try and give more info later about lighting, water parameters etc. The plants are a cold-water collection. The fish are lovely-looking but I suspect they are stunted, as they are at least five years old and have spent their lives in tiny...
