    Skittish discus

I have kept the lights off so it's just natural light in the room. They dart around then hide. After a minute they realise they are being fed and they come out. My fear is that they are going to damage themselves hitting the glass. I will give the screen a go and reduce its size as the days go by.

    Bigger fish to force schooling

    HELP damselfly nymph!!

Hi. Only a suggestion but could you remove all live stock and cover the tank top with mesh. That would stop eggs being laid. Once larve become air borne they can be removed? I have an open top aquarium and there are midges on the water. These are a new food source.

    Bigger fish to force schooling

Fish have evolved like any other animal, they have all adapted to an environment. Fish belong to a hostile environment weather predator or prey. Both have developed ways to survive. Safety in numbers is a survival technic. If you were to find yourself lost in a dark forrest your senses would...

    Bigger fish to force schooling

I would say shoaling is just a numbers game. If you are in a crowd of say 200 people it would increase your chance of not being noticed. On the opposite, if there was just me and you then we both have a 50% chance of being chosen. Fish shoal purely to maximise their chance to survive.

    Get the wife involved.

I like the pencil fish, i do however think a tall aquarium is too small. I would like to have a small fish that is not often seen. I once owned a pygmy gourami pair. Never again have i seen them for sale. They were liquorice gourami. I looked into dwarf puffers, but they are best kept single.
  89. D

    Bigger fish to force schooling

Mountain minnows are such an unrated fish. Pay closer attention to how they interact with each other. I find shoal interaction more pleasing than the desire to have them ball up like sardines. I have 30 of them and apart from the initial intro to the aquarium they never shoal together.

    Get the wife involved.

The upper section of the tank is empty but with fast growing plants it wont be long in filling that gap. I was thinking of red pencil fish or shrimp.

I have kept fish for years. I was stupid for not having a spare impeller. Although the filter should be ok left off for a while. It is not a good idea to practice this.
