  1. A Bull With Yogurts

    Any suggestions?

    Needs substrate.
  2. A Bull With Yogurts

    Any suggestions?

Yes, Ficus pumila looks a good option. Attach it at the water line and let it grow up the wood.
  3. A Bull With Yogurts

    Any suggestions?

There's only about 15cm of space above the water's surface, so the plants would need to remain fairly small. Also they need to not be so heavy as to unbalance the wood.
  4. A Bull With Yogurts

    Any suggestions?

Tops of some of my wood pieces stick out the water. Can anyone suggest any plants which might be able to attach themselves to wood and dangle their roots into the water? Anubias spring to mind but I think the light would be too intense and there might not be enough moisture in the air

    Corydoras habrosus?

Yeah. Just reluctant to get them posted at the moment. I know what couriers are like. There's every chance they'll spend the night freezing loaded into the back of a van ready for the next morning's delivery round. I'll drop into MA Basingstoke on Sat and pick some up.
  6. A Bull With Yogurts

    Corydoras habrosus?

Thanks for the tip. Will pop in next time I'm flying into Gatwick.
  7. A Bull With Yogurts

    Corydoras habrosus?

I'm like you. I always like to see the fish before I buy them. Assess their health and prevent the stress of being thrown around in the back of a courier's van.
  8. A Bull With Yogurts

    Corydoras habrosus?

Thanks. Only 30mins up the motorway from me. Will pop in on my way to The Smoke later this week.
  9. A Bull With Yogurts

    Corydoras habrosus?

Is he still going? His website is dead (https://www.corys4u.co.uk) so assumed he'd shut up shop.
  10. A Bull With Yogurts

    Corydoras habrosus?

Anyone know of any breeders who'd be able to supply 10x Corydoras habrosus (Salt & Pepper Corys). Thanks

    Definitely coming along to this.

How would you plant this tank?

Thanks. Good to have positive feedback as I'm really not that confident in what I'm doing.
  14. A Bull With Yogurts

How would you plant this tank?

Well, I couldn't find much information either despite doing a fair bit of searching. I elected to make all the pipework into tunnels (rather than caves) to reduce the issue of dead water. I'll also be flushing them out each week when I do water changes to remove any build up of detritus. Will...

Here's a better picture of the tank.
  16. A Bull With Yogurts

How would you plant this tank?

Ancistrus cirrhosus Well, I say network...that's a bit grandiose in all honesty. It's simple really and looks like this under the covers. There's a T shaped piece already under the gravel.
  17. A Bull With Yogurts

How would you plant this tank?

Should also say, this is the list of low light plants that I'm working from. I found it on another forum and should credit it, but unfortunately I can't remember now where it was. If any of these plants jump out at you as being inappropriate for this tank then please let me know. FERNS & MOSSES...

How would you plant this tank?

Hi all, I'm currently putting together my first tank and have just finished the hardscape. As a total novice who has never even owned a goldfish bowl before, I would really appreciate some advice. First some info on the setup: The tank's an older style Juwel Rio 400 and is 150cm long and 55cm...

LED lighting for Juwel Rio 400

Yes indeed. Once of the reasons I bought them. Looks like I'll have to get the (enormously overpriced) AquaRay 2 Channel one though, since I can't find a compatible 3rd party controller which uses PWM. All the cheap ones on eBay use current reduction for dimming. I'll keep my eyes peeled on...

LED lighting for Juwel Rio 400

Just in case anymore stumbles across this thread in the future, I thought I'd do a concluding post. I spend a good while going round in circles reading numerous anecdotal accounts of various LED units. Given that most of these were contradictory I decided to hunt down some decent articles based...

LED lighting for Juwel Rio 400

I saw a similar kit on another forum thread a while back. Seems like a great idea. Don't like the price though. Ouch. I'm thinking about employing my Destroy-It-Yourself skills to knock up a PVC frame with 2 slotted tracks and then constructing 3 net panels which can slide in the tracks. Will...

LED lighting for Juwel Rio 400

Hi Andy, Well, I'm open to ideas at the moment. Let's be honest, the Juwel hood looks cack, so superficially I like the idea of ditching it. However, I'm not sure about an open tank. The evaporation would be an issue, as would my preferred choice of fish (some are jumpers). I've already been...

LED lighting for Juwel Rio 400

Hi all, The old T8 unit in my Rio 400 died tonight. Pretty sure I heard the ballast fizz out when I switched it on. I've doubled checked everything else (socket, fuse, switch, bulbs) just in case but they are all fine. As a result I'm pretty sure the ballast has given up the ghost. I'm not...

Reflective White Paint For Hood Underside

Well, just to update this thread, the benefit of the white paint is now a moot point because my old Juwel T8 lighting unit packed up this evening. I'm not messing around with a replacement Juwel T5 unit (especially considering they cost over 100 quid) so it looks like I'm going down the LED...

Reflective White Paint For Hood Underside

Will definitely keep these in mind. Decided to try a dirt cheap tube of titanium white acrylic paint first though since it was only £1.91. If I don't get a reasonable increase in the lux then I'll stump up for the parabolic reflectors.
  26. A Bull With Yogurts

Reflective White Paint For Hood Underside

    Hydroponic tomato growers.
  27. A Bull With Yogurts

Reflective White Paint For Hood Underside

Ah ha, didn't realise they existed. On the plus side the parabolic shape should focus the light downwards and they are definitely less hassle. Just a bit steep at 10 quid a pop though.
  28. A Bull With Yogurts

Reflective White Paint For Hood Underside

Thanks for the suggestion. Did a bit of research and from what I've read metallic reflectors are a pretty poor choice as, despite looking very shiny, they only reflect a limited amount of light.
  29. A Bull With Yogurts

Reflective White Paint For Hood Underside

Thanks for that. Looked at their website but unfortunately their FAQ says that the spray is not safe for aquatic organisms.

Resolved! Threads Not Being Automatically Watched

I have confirmed a problem with GMail. Having told it once again that ukaps.org is not spam, it has directed another alert email to my spam folder. Will contact Google and report the bug.

Resolved! Threads Not Being Automatically Watched

Apologies. That's exactly where they were. Really annoying as when I received the account confirmation email I configured GMail to not flag email from the ukaps.org domain as spam. Seems that Google thinks it knows better...

Reflective White Paint For Hood Underside

Ah right. My plastic hood flaps have been thoroughly cleaned and have a mottled surface. This paint should take to it without any problems I hope.

What other hobby's do you have?

With 3 young kids (aged 5, 4, 2) I don't get time for much to be honest. I used to enjoy astronomy until I moved to a house with a garden enclosed by bloody fir trees. Can't see much now apart from the postage stamp sized bit of sky directly above. I used to enjoy cycling but rarely get a free...

Reflective White Paint For Hood Underside

Interesting...I'd have thought something fixed using an adhesive would have peeled off eventually, what with the humidity and all. Will investigate. Thanks. BTW, what problems did you have with your various paints?
  36. A Bull With Yogurts

Reflective White Paint For Hood Underside

Hi all, I've decided that in order to maximise the light inside my tank I'm going to spray paint the underside of my tank hood. I've got an older Juwel Rio 400 (pre 2009) and the hood panels are made from fairly cheap and nasty black plastic. The surface is mottled so the paint should take...

At these ludicrous prices if I were you I'd be tempted to hack down the entire tree and flog it on eBay piece by piece!

Where can I take latin lessons?

Hi Andy. I thought there might be a bit of crossover in membership with PFK. I've read so much contradictory advice across the various aquarium sites in the last few weeks I just go with the general consensus now. That said, I'm relying on you to set me straight if you spot any horrendous...

    Amano RIP?

I got fed up with trying to dream up names when registering for forums so I dumped my name into an online anagram generator. This was the best one it came up with. Works for me as I never forget it and nobody else has ever registered using it. Does sometimes generate some funny responses...

These Driftwood pieces something you would put in your planted tank ?

I'm doing my entire build on the cheap so buying driftwood is totally off the cards. Collected a load of candidate pieces in the local woods over the weekend and am currently soaking them. At those silly prices that's probably a couple of hundred quid's worth! Hmmmm, I smell a business...

Malaysian Trumpet Snail In An 'El Natural' Tank

OK, that's good to know. I don't really want a membrane if I can get away without one. I've bought 25kg of Unipac Limpopo to go in the tank. Apparently it's a good choice for small catfish as it doesn't damage their barbels. The grain size is apparently 1.0mm - 1.2mm. When I was reading up on...

Malaysian Trumpet Snail In An 'El Natural' Tank

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about. Not keen on going for the muddy swamp look with this partcular tank. Any idea how deep MTS tend to burrow?

Malaysian Trumpet Snail In An 'El Natural' Tank

Hi, I'm totally new to all this and having a stab at setting up an El Natural tank (350L). I'm currently in the preparation stages of my soil and driftwood. I am planning to have an inch of soil capped by an inch of sand. I want to put Malaysian Trumpet Snails in the tank to stir the sand and...

How/Where did you hear about Ukaps.org?????

Came across it numerous times at the top of my Google searches for info about planted aquariums. Spent a while (and by 'a while' I mean weeks) obsessively researching the topic by mainly reading old threads on the site. Eventually I thought I should probably join up.

Where can I take latin lessons?

Hi everyone, I'm totally new to aquariums and all things aquatic. I'm learning a lot very quickly though thanks to forums such as this. One of these seems to be latin. Having just started to get my head around the Animalia kingdom I'm now throwing the Plantae kingdom into the mix too. Somehow I...
