Some people use ladies tights or stockings (nylon ones I would Imagine). You can buy filter inlet caps on ebay, I bought one - it was reasonably well made (home made) but it clogged up far to easily so i ended up bining it.

I find the squashing method kind of cruel but the fish in my tank go crazy for the unshelled snails!

I may be going off the thread slightly and these may sound like a stupid questions but :- Fistly do assassin snails only eat other snails, I keep various shrimps and micro crabs - I couldn't really foresee a problem with them eating shrimps but is it likely they could attack the crabs...

Mine was called Bingo (the kids name some of the fish :) ) he cured a terible algae problem, but after reading a few more posts I think it might have been Black Bush Algae (I have heard they eat hair algae too though). He used to chase my Corys but I don't think he actually ever hurt anyone...

I found the best fish for getting rid of hair algae was a SAE - he was a little bit terratorial though

Have you considered a sponge filter - if it is for a shrimp breeding tank these are the safest filters - If it is a display tank they look a bit naff.

The water parameter seem fine - did you fill the new tank with water from the community tank? What sort of filter are you using?

I bought 7 from a different German Breeder, 5 were DOA and the other 2 died within a couple of days --- these little beauties don't travel very well be very careful.
